Is there a way to trigger a change to a UnDP via an alert?

I'm musing this one over, as it applies when we bring new nodes into support and we don't always remember to apply the appropriate UnDPs to them. As such, I'm looking to remove the burden of either manually following a checklist or trying to remember to do it.

The thinking is, this alert could run once a day, and for any node that matches (probably sub identified by Vendor and Hardware_Type [a custom property we have] ) it would then go and apply any UnDPs that have been created for that Make & Model of device. Would also be good if said trigger/alert ignored any nodes that already have the UnDPs applied.

I'm thinking of how the 'change custom property' trigger works and would be useful to do this.

Any thoughts outside of custom scripting which is a step too far for me?

So looking at this from a SWQL and API standpoint, I keep waffling on how to tackle it since the best route isn't obvious at the moment.

Some type of Custom Property
Some type of script via Alert Action
Some type of SWQL Alert to kick off on a schedule. This is at least something I hope contributes. This was a POC i built awhile back where I needed to have an alert trigger at a specific time on a specific day of the week. (Think recurring maintenance modes ). You'll need to update the WHERE clause with something 'AND Nodes.NodeID = 1' so it only triggers a single alert.

I think an alert is making this harder than it has to be, especially if its only expected to check once a day.

I've handled this two ways in the past.

In my own environments I set a bunch of sql triggers directly in the database tables. If a node gets added to the system that matches whatever criteria then a corresponding entry is added to the relevant custompoller tables. I didn't like even leaving people the option to do things wrong or forget them in my environment.

For customer environments where they dont want me to get too crazy then I just run a script like this example as a windows scheduled task, with blocks for managing all the UNDP's. I still try to cover everything in code so there is no reason for something to slip through the cracks.

I think UNDP's can already get applied out for something like Make and Model, right?

Sans that and scripting, the alert -> CP -> Group -> Apply a monitor thing is a pretty doable SAM method, not sure about NPM only though

I know I can either add a node via the UnDP 'tool' (very painful process) or I can 'Assign pollers' from the manage nodes / entities but this is about looking down the line after the UnDP has been created and initially assigned, to a new node of same vendor/etc gets added, but also gets missed for adding the UnDP to.

And no SAM. Just NPM, NCM, Netflow.

Similar to this, for a client I set up a nightly scheduled task on the SW server that ran a PowerShell script to check if all the relevant pollers were assigned to particular devices.

The reason I mention alert is due to the trigger that alerts have for assigning/changing CP's and the fact that they have all the functionality in them for scheduling/triggering/etc.
