The requirement to monitor the Linux file was created more than 30mins

Hi All,

The requirement is to monitor in solarwinds that whenever a file was created for more than 30 minutes alert need to triggered for Linux file. (eg: /var/log)

If any one aware and achievable from solarwinds, kindly share your thoughts her.

Can you clarify in better detail what you are wanting to monitor and alert on?

For example some log files are created for the day. Some are only created when there is something to write to it.

Are you wanting to know when it was last updated (written to) and alert if it hasn't been written to in the last 30 minutes?

If that is the case ,you must also consider what the log file is for. If it is for an application that varies in what it processes due to on demand load and that load changes throughout the day or can vary from day to day, it is possible that you may have times where there is nothing to write to it for 30 minutes or more and you'd get an alert. If it is a "chatty" log file that normally a fair amout of data written to it then it is a reasonable request.

next part, is it just a single log file or a list of log files, can they have different time requirements?

So to answer your basic question, the answer is yes. I'd use a small perl script that is initiated from Solarwinds or via cron and feed the output back into solarwinds.

The requirement is from application team, they have given so and so path in the Linux server and from that path if a lock file get created and its available for more than 30mins alert need to triggered in Solarwinds.

1) The node will have to be using the solarwinds Agent. Yes there are other ways, but they are WAY more complicated.

2) If you can do it in hours instead of minutes, then there is a file age monitor. Easy answer.

3) If you must be more precise than an hour then your only choice would be using a linux script monitor and make something up like this bash script

echo "Statistic.fileage: " $(( $(date +"%s") - $(stat /tmp/SOME.FILE --print "%W") ))

That will get you the age in seconds of /tmp/SOME.FILE
