Setup an alert to email multiple people when a window service goes down

I'm Trying to setup an alert for when a couple of windows services go down. I need to have the alert send out emails to people and are not on the default SMPT list. So, using SAM applications monitoring is out.

Just not too sure on what to do for the trigger condition. The screenshot below is an example of what I have done. And it's not sending out an email when one of the services is down.

I'm not trying to monitor these services. I just picked these for an example

I am slightly confused at what it is you are trying to achieve but if I am interpreting correctly then please let me know if is accurate:

- You would like to monitor for specific services

- When the services go down you need an e-mail sent to recipients

- The recipients are not "on the default SMTP list", not sure what you mean by this, also my understanding is that your Action can e-mail any address you give it so long as your e-mail environment allows for routing to that e-mail address

If that all lines up in terms of what you require, then my suggested approach would be:

- Create a SAM Application (monitoring) template with Windows Service Monitor components to monitor the required services

- Create an Alert with a Trigger Condition that looks for the required Windows Service Monitor components in a 'negative' status/state, there's many ways to define this but perhaps Down or Critical (this can be set in the Application Template)

- Create a 'Send an Email/Page' action and assign to the Alert under the 'Trigger Actions' section - you can also test this by using 'Simulate' lightning bolt icon, this option is available when you have assigned the action to the Alert

This should do it. If more detail or help is needed to achieve this I am happy to help you further with the above steps/suggestion.

You want the 2 lines about the process names to be in an OR block, it's not possible for there to be a process called both sqlserver and msdtc at the same time

Other than that what you're doing is fine and makes sense.

You can call a node custom property or something containing an email address if it needs to vary it's output based on who owns what critical server

Thanks for this. What I meant by the SMTP statement is if I create a SAM monitor it uses the SMTP settings and, in those settings, you tell it who to email. We have it going to a group email. And applies to all the SAM Monitors. These people are not in that group, and I don't want them to be.

I did try and to make what you said before and I could not find what trigger condition to see the SAM app monitor.

So, you mean the "At least one child must be satisfied (OR)"?

Do you see and AND here, you are using an AND clause. You will need to redefine your condition if you want email alerts for both these processes.

You Trigger condition should look like this:

AND

- Component status is equal to Down

- Then add a new AND/OR Block and in that select OR (Inside OR Block - as it will be either of this)

- Component Process is equal to sqlserv.exe

- Component Process is equal to mstdc.exe

Second part of your query how do you send this as an email alert to specific folks

- In your Trigger Action tab - you are using the default send location on the email message and this is configured under your SMTP Default email id

- Its not necessary that you use the same, you can create a new email action and send it to specific email id's, but be careful dont modify the existing trigger action as it will change globally, create a new trigger action email and make the changes.

If you are still not clear ping here before you do the changes in your environment.
