Import MIB in solarwind

Hi there

Hope everyone is fine and doing good, I have installed NPM (version: 2024.1.1) on trial basis. I have to monitor the hardware components of my cisco switches (etc. fan, power supply, temperature and other). I have downloaded the MIB from cisco website. But I am unable to import the MIB into the solarwind platform. When I go to the MIB management, it gives the following error "failed to determine MIB database status".

Any help regarding this will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

A first step would be making sure your NPM server has internet access and that your firewall allows access to api.solarwinds.com and downloads.solarwinds.com. These are needed for downloading and updating the MIB DB.

Just to add to this, importing MiBs from vendors requires a support request to Solarwinds in order to update the database with the latest vendor MiB. This process takes about two weeks. Once support confirms the MiB has been imported into the SW DB, then you update the database on the server. Have you checked that it is not already loaded?
The vast majority of the Cisco MIBs are precompiled into the system, and it's very rare to have to request Support's assistance.

Mark @mark.gover response as correct, he is absolutely correct, you can't directly download a MIB and upload it onto SolarWinds. You will need to reach out to SolarWinds vendor if its something that is unavailable in SolarWinds to get the new MIBs packaged into the bundled SolarWinds MIB file.

Plus you are talking about cisco switches hence I am assuming what ever is it that you are looking for should already be available in the current NPM version.

Use the NPM MIB Browser to determine the OID's and the meaning for devices being monitored in the SolarWinds environment. Select the products and versions this article pertains too. Open NPM Web Console. Navigate to a node detail page in question and click MIB Browser under Management resource on the node.

I've never seen a Cisco switch that wasn't already supported, what kind of switches are these?

Hi Ammar.
As @mark.gover said, you need to open a ticket with support and they will include the Cisco MIB in the SW MIB database, after confirmation you can download it from the Customer Portal (Since you are getting the message you mentioned) > Run the .msi file on all deployed polling engines - on the main polling server, HA backup server, and any additional polling engines. If it requires a reboot, disable the HA to avoid a disaster.

However, as you want to monitor hardware sensors, I don't think the MIB update will help.

It says:

Adding MIBs into Orion will not change the way Orion polls devices.
Adding MIBs into Orion will not change a device that has an Unknown Machine Type.

Adding a device's MIBs into Orion will not change a device from being an unknown Machine type. If this is what you need, please let me know.

I believe that for most Cisco devices SolarWinds can poll the hardware details if the 'Hardware Health Sensor' option is enabled in the List Resource, and if it contains all necessary OIDs. Check: Enable hardware health monitoring and Hardware health OIDS used by NPM

This is the key, Cisco devices are extremely well supported and I've not seen any network gear that didn't already support all those hardware sensors you are talking about. You shouldn't have to do anything except tick the box for "hardware health" when you add the node.

These are all good points @paulocruz . If the Machine Type is incorrect, then the MIB database will not help. If Machine Type are incorrect, please open a support ticket so we can help get this resolved properly.
