Cisco Switch Update Issue in Orion (24 ports to 48 ports)

Hello everyone,

We recently replaced a 24-port Cisco switch with a new 48-port model. However, the switch update is not fully reflected in Orion.

Symptoms:

All ports of the new switch appear correctly in the various node views (Inventory, Current Percent Utilization of Each Interface, etc.).
However, the "Port Details" view still shows the 24 ports of the old switch.

Actions taken:

Restarted Orion services.
Attempted to manually update the switch in Orion.

Unfortunately, the problem persists.

Additional information:

Orion Platform version: SolarWinds Platform, VMAN, NCM, IPAM, UDT, SRM, NPM, SAM: 2023.3.1
Cisco switch model: 9200L with IOS 17.6.5

I have searched the SolarWinds forums and documentation, but I have not found a solution to this specific problem.

I would be grateful if someone could help me resolve this issue.

Have you deleted and readded the switch new? if not this is what you need to do as Orion doesn't like you using the same IP for an updated Node

if you list resources on the switch are the missing ports unselected?

This would be the correct approach. All resources (i.e. interfaces, volumes, etc) associated with the node is stored in the collector database. If the number of interfaces change, we would need to discover them via "list resources". Rediscovering the node should work as well, but this is a bit of overkill.

Yes, all of the interfaces are on the List Resources and have been selected. No changes still..

You don't actually need to delete and re-add.

What you do need to do is "tidy up" the unknown ports afterwards. With Cisco nodes, this could happen after a simple reboot if you don't have snmp ifindex persist configured on the node. Why? Well Ciscos love to change their ifindex, which is what SNMP [in simplistic terms] works with to get what is needed.

In the Manage Nodes view, simply tick each of the "greyed" ports and then delete.

I'll just go ahead and save users some trouble. There is a button labeled "rediscover" on the node details and it will absolutely not fix the interfaces being monitored when you swap out a switch. Seen people struggle with this countless times for over 10 years. In this case by "rediscover" the person mean delete the node and run a network discovery to add it back in. Replacing a piece of hardware in Orion is plagued with nuisances and it almost always better to just blow it away and add it in as something new.
