To answer this firstly you need to know what SolarWinds can achieve, what are the modules it has and how does it really work in principal. If you aren't aware of the modules then its a bit challenging to explain it.
There is a nice video which talks about SolarWinds Platform by Cheryl - This gives you an idea on what SolarWinds platform is, but then there is a lot more to it (each of these pieces have multiple things within it and there are few standalone modules as well which do not fall under this).
