NCM report to show all serial numbers of all switches in a stack

Hi,

I know there exists documentation to generate a report to have all serial numbers of all switches in a switch stack but that is if you have NPM module in your environment. I only have IPAM and NCM modules installed.

I referred to the Cisco Chassis ID's in-built report on NCM but for some reason it shows me the serial number for some switches and not all. I have a support case open to check if this is a bug.

Does anyone have a custom report for NCM that would give us the serial number for all the switches in a stack ?

Hmm I cant help you completely here as I don't know if what I am saying is 100% accurate. Run an inventory job on one of your stacked switches. And check if details of the members appear in NCM.EntityPhysical. The EntityName with Switch1% or Chassis1% are the members on your stacked switch. I don't think you have a direct way of pulling it - probably someone can help you with a SWQL Query to pull this information out of NCM.EntityPhysical.

Hi, there is a Cisco Switch Stack Member Report that you can run which will output the switch stack details including the serial number of each switch. I use it but can't remember if it is a web default report or if I got it off a forum. It will output switches with stack capability so expect to see them in the report even though they don't have additional stack members e.g. lots of switch#1 entries.

To create the report set it up as below in the report manager using a custom table:

can we have a script to extract the serial numbers\chassis ids of all cisco devices including virtual cisco devices?

Op did say they don't have access to NPM. Doesn't this report use that?

Just in case anybody else only has access to NCM then you could extract the stack serial numbers using this approach:

SWQL Code:

SELECT TOP 1000  ep.node.NodeCaption, ep.EntityName, ep.EntityDescription, ep.Serial, ep.Manufacturer, ep.Model, ep.EntPhysicalIndex
FROM NCM.EntityPhysical AS ep

WHERE (ep.EntPhysicalIndex = '1000')
      OR (ep.EntPhysicalIndex =  '2000')
      OR (ep.EntPhysicalIndex =  '3000')
      OR (ep.EntPhysicalIndex =  '4000')
      OR (ep.EntPhysicalIndex =  '5000')
      OR (ep.EntPhysicalIndex =  '6000')
      OR (ep.EntPhysicalIndex =  '7000')
      OR (ep.EntPhysicalIndex =  '8000')
AND ep.EntityName = 'Switch%'

You'd then need to extract the standalone switches in a separate data block if you put the above into a report. When exported to Excel, it appears as a 2nd tab.

Caveat: be aware that if you do this, then Stack Member 1 will also appear in the report for standalone nodes.

Thanks if we need to extract the chassis IDs directly or by chassis IDs of cisco OIDs then what should be the script in that case?

I suggest you install a copy of SWQL Studio, copy/paste the above and then play around to see what you get.

For example, in our primary environment if I run the above 'as is' then I get 610 results. If I remove the filters (the WHERE and AND's) and the TOP 1000 then I get 208K results. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve in how you narrow it down.

Great thanks is that script will also extract Cisco virtual devices serial numbers because can see only physical entities serial numbers.

FYI, as of 2025.4.1, Aruba and Cisco switch stacks can be monitored (which shows status, serial, resource usage). A really useful feature!
