Historical chart of node count over time?

I would like to create a simple line chart that will show the total node count over time. Then, I might want to have a variation that shows only switch count over time, or server count, etc.

Is that possible on either a classic or modern dashboard? Thanks for any help.

You can use a simple query for that.

SELECT count (IPAddress) AS Total
FROM Orion.Nodes

And you then can use the Where to grab specific node types, example:

SELECT count (IPAddress) AS Total
FROM Orion.Nodes 
Where MachineType like '%Windows%'

SELECT count (IPAddress) AS Total
FROM Orion.Nodes 
Where Caption like '%SW%'

Anything you want to grab from the Orion.Nodes table can be used in the Where. If you want to link or join other tables you can use the Where from those tables as well.

I did this the other day and I do recommend!

What Bob's suggesting gives you a count in SWQL for NOW, so the problem is committing that to the DB over time

You want SAM for that really, not sure if you could do it with just npm without getting really hacky.

What you want is an account with minimum permissions, and to use that account to query solarwinds from solarwinds, you can do that in SAM powershell or API pollers or maybe SAM SQL etc.

You put basically Bob's query in, and output the count as a statistic, then it's tracked in the same way as any other.

Bonus points if it's an api poller as that can go on an orion map.

Bit hard to directly paste content because of authentication methods and slightly different queries.

You could do as @adam.beedell suggested and create a SAM template to do a similar SQL (not SWQL) query and that query results would then be recorded unto the database and kept over time using this out of the box template.
