Unable to understand about the poller some features

Hi Team,

Please see the below snapshot, i have some doubt in it. It' regarding the poller of ICMP nodes. My doubt on disable (20) and i have few questions on it as mentioned below.

1. Why few nodes are showing in disable area?

2. Why it's showing disable.

3. Is it disable by any person or it's disable due to some technical issue.

4. How to identify the reason for disable and how can i fix this issue?

What you are looking at is the detail of poller assignments.

Irrespective of the actual poller, all this page is showing you are the nodes that are not using that poller. So you have 20 nodes (listed as disabled) that are not using the ICMP poller. To try and answer your specific questions then:

Because they are not using that poller.
It means that poller is not used (or can't be used) by that node.
You'd need to look at the audit logs to see if a person specifically disabled it.
The screenshot is telling you that these nodes match multiple pollers. You can only assign one poller to a node.

If you want t' "fix" then simply enable the poller by clicking on 'Poller Status' line where it says off. It suggests that these disabled nodes are using another method to poll. And that is probably SNMP.

To confirm that for yourself, then go to the node details page of one of the disabled nodes and click on 'List Resources'. Once it is loaded, look for this:

If like the screenshot above, it is set to SNMP then that is why it is shown as disabled. This could have been auto-selected by the system at discovery, or changed down the line. Bottom line, it isn't really something to worry about.

There are likely valid reasons why SNMP was selected for status & response, but you'd need to check that with your technical teams

I have checked and able to fix almost 18 nodes out of 20. But still I am unable to fix below two nodes. Please check and advice.

Secondly, Please tell me more about your point no.3 regarding audit logs. I don't have more knowledge in this area, please suggest good study material and about the use of audit logs and how can I use this in a meaningful manners.

Thirdly, Suppose we have added one or few nodes using SNMP in that case why nodes some time selected using SNMP or sometime ICMP without manual selection. Which is the best and why we choose ICMP over SNMP?

I think the device snmp has an issue. Can you run a snmp walk on the device and verify the OID in the custom puller exists on that device?

If you haven’t used snmpwalk, it’s on the puller engine usually like C:\program\solarwinds\orion\snmpwalk.exe.

So the screenshot you shared tells you that the poller you are trying to use on those devices doesn't match - or in other words, it isn't the right one. I can't tell you why as I don't know what those devices are, nor how your environment is configured.

As to the audit logs, I'm simply talking about looking through >Alerts & Activity > Message Centre. If you need to go further back than it will show, then it might be easier to create a report to extract the details.

So, ICMP is faster than SNMP and is the preferred approach. But in some circumstances ICMP can be blocked but SNMP is available, so the node will use that.
