Error with netpath

working on getting netpath to work and started an easy connection to 8.8.8.8 on port 53. After the first poll, I'm getting this error:

DNS Error DNS resolution of destination IP Address failed.

A traceroute on the server works without an issue. Enabling debug logging I am seeing this error:

2024-05-14 08:36:49,792 [STP SmartThreadPool Thread #0] ERROR SolarWinds.NetPath.Agent.Probe.Traceroute.Util.LocalIpMacResolver - (null) Found no matching interface. Error code: 10058

I've done a search and found nothing in KBs or other articles on this. Wanted to check with the group before I submit a case.

Hi @mharvey, from a PowerShell prompt on the SolarWinds server can you try the following:

Test-NetConnection 8.8.8.8 -port 53

This will test to see if the SolarWinds server is able to access the IP over port 53.

Could you also perform an nslookup from a cmd prompt to 8.8.8.8? it should resolve to dns.google

nslookup 8.8.8.8

Also if the Above PowerShell command to port 53 fails "Test-NetConnection 8.8.8.8 -port 53 WARNING: TCP connect to (8.8.8.8 : 53) failed"

The first place i would check is your firewall. Port 53 may be blocked except from your internal DNS server which will resolve the the NSlookup 8.8.8.8. you can also try doing nslookup>enter and on the next line at the carot > type server 8.8.8.8 enter on the nest line type www.google.com and see if it resolves correctly

Our firewall do not allow port 53 except from our dns server example above (the poor mans test)

Turns out the issue was due to having an inaccurate DNS server specified on one of the two nics on the server that was statically assigned. Thanks for the suggestions though.

That is strange using an IP should bypass DNS. That is usually the test for DNS resolution IE: ping dns.google fails but ping 8.8.8.8 works (if ICMP is enabled), it is a DNS issue (another poor mans /goverment tools test). On the above test you set up NSlookup to not use your DNS settings and use the server you set. We use multiple DNS servers in a load balancer and this is a way to test the individual servers and bypass any machine settings.
