MIB walk on server shows OID. Testing in Universal Devoce poller show not supported.

I'm trying to just get the status of a UPS. Is it on battery or not. I did a mib walk of one of the UPSes from the server and the text output shows this line among the many OIDs

".1.3.6.1.4.1.850.1.3.4.1.1.3.1.7 = STRING: "On Battery" "

When I run the test while creating a Universal Poller the result is that all the fields in the table ( OID for the table = 1.3.6.1.4.1.850.1.3.4.1.1.3 ) is that the OID is not supported.

do you confirm with vendor, thats OID is the correct one ?

I used the Mib Browser with a sample UPS chosen, as you can see in the blue box. The MIB is from Tripp-Lite which is the brand we use.

I was under the impression that if I do a MIB walk and if the OID returns a value, then it would work on the device I walked. Is this not the case?

Maybe you need to setup you UNDP poller as a GET or GETNEXT for the specific .1.3.6.1.4.1.850.1.3.4.1.1.3.1.7.

It looks like its showing a table for your .1.3.6.1.4.1.850.1.3.4.1.1.3 example. You just need to do a specific get for the next 1.7 of the hierarchy maybe?

Pretty certain that the oid you are looking for does not do what you think it does.

That table looks like it provides a list of every possible alarm that device could trigger via an SNMP trap. Walking against the oid and seeing the output you saw doesnt mean the device is currently on battery

It means if you got a trap that was using that OID it means the device is on battery at the time when the trap hits you.

If it were me I'd probably be polling 1.3.6.1.4.1.850.1.1.2.2 and alerting when seconds on battery > 1 or something like that

I am trying to get alerts when a UPS is on battery, so if the string " On Battery" is true and it sends me an alert that would be what I want. However, I could use the seconds on battery for the same result. The issue is that SW tells me even that OID can not be used on this node, which is one of my UPSes. I was told by a Tripp-Lite support person that doing a mib walk on one of my UPSes was the way to determine what OIDs I could use. I did that and have a text file output. It shows these OIDs, yet finding one that allows it to poll in Solar Winds has been very difficult.

That oid is kind of a special case, that string will always be true regardless of the power source because it's just a list of the meaning of potential traps the device can send outbound, so I wouldn't waste any more time worrying about the setting to try and poll it.

In general there are some details with SNMP that determine if your are going to do a plain get (usually works for individual specific oids) , or a get-next (usually for tables), and how to get the undp tool to correctly present the info. If I happen across a Tripp lite again with a customer I could figure it what exactly works for this situation but there's not really any need to reinvent the wheel because various versions of UPS UNDP bundles have been floating around thwack forever.
