Monitor DNS timeout

We want to monitor when DNS is timing out on the non DNS servers. Initially we want to use the DNS User Experience Monitor template, however, our Microsoft team rejected the idea as allowing port 53 will potentially expose the non DNS server to DNS related traffic. Is there any other way to monitor nslookup failure other than using DNS User Experience Monitor template?

Is this another DNS server that you want to monitor, other than the one your solarwinds server is already using? I guess you already have dns enabled and opened to your solarwinds server so nothing more to open, unless this is another dns server you want to check.

If you want full control, add a powershell script that does the job instead.

Weird objection from your team given that DNS kinda has to be open already

Otherwise as seashore said. You could chuck that on an agent and it'd have the possibility of less ports if there's an agent involved and you've already got that port open

If you are trying to just verify if DNS is functioning from a different source than a DNS server, then as Seashore mentioned, Powershell would probably be the best way to go. Write a SAM Powershell monitor to check DNS, if failed report down, if the resolution time exceeded y warning, exceed x then critical.
