Hi,
I'm new to Solarwinds, may i know on how to add a service for Solarwinds monitoring?
Manage SAM application monitor templates and application monitors (solarwinds.com)
Welcome to the world of SolarWinds, I am assuming you already have SAM which is why you have posted this query on SAM forum.
@Seashore has already pasted the link that will help you with all that you need with respect to SAM.
If you are first timer in that case the easiest approach is make sure you have admin rights to SAM, then open any Windows box on which you want to monitor the service.
On the node details page you should see this, click on Service Control Manager (if you don't see this that means you do not have sufficient rights in SAM or node is just added as a ICMP node.
Click on 'Service Control Manager'
That will pop up a screen like the one mentioned below along with all the services on that box, under assigned application if there is a name like 'Active Directory' in the below example that means its already there in one of the templates - you can read on how to manage templates later. But to play around for the first time click on any one where you see '+ Start Monitoring this service' , navigate through the steps that it shows and create your first template Hope this helps.

Hi @vinay.by ,
Thanks for the reply, just to ask if i click start monitoring the service, will there be alerts if services is stopped?
Another question is also for IIS service, is there a way to monitor the services from IIS, for eg, site is stopped?
If a generic SAM component/template based alert exists in your environment then for sure an alert will be fired. Its a little difficult to say without knowing what alerts are configured in your environment.
1. This will only reside on your Primary poller or Additional Web Server if any (if you are talking about IIS used by SolarWinds). You can use a built in one to proactively monitor your SolarWinds IIS (AppInsight for IIS):
https://documentation.solarwinds.com/en/success_center/sam/content/sam-appinsight-for-iis-sw1604.htm
Note: You cannot monitor site down for your own tool from within the tool, ideally this should be configured outside of SolarWinds, if its SolarWinds site that you are talking about.
2. If you are talking about site is stopped for a different application which you are monitoring through SolarWinds in that case you have various options:
1. AppInsight for IIS
2. Service/Process as described in previous section
3. Or you can have a simple http/https component monitor - where you just provide the URL of the site that you want to monitor like https://solarwindsown.com/ (Links has been provided below)
https://documentation.solarwinds.com/en/success_center/sam/content/sam-https-monitor-sw3245.htm
Hope this helps.
