Alert variables

I am looking for a way to send the Group Name that a node is a member of in an email alert action. I cannot find a way to do this. I know I can add a custom properties, but since I created groups I was hoping there was a way to do this. Is this possible?

Secondly, is there an up-to-date reference for ALL variables that are supported in NPM/Orion? I read a reference but I noticed it did NOT contain all the variables supported. For instance, ${N=SwisEntity;M=CustomProperties.x) is not listed in this reference yet it works. I only know about it from an older Orion/NPM installation

It also depends on what type of alert it is (Under Trigger Condition check what is selected under 'I want to alert on') - not all variables can be used, or in other words not all alert variables are applicable based on the type of alert.

Thank you for the quick reply. I looked at that link already, but did not realize you couldn't cross reference variables. Thanks for explaining that limitation. My goal is to provide location information for the node. For instance, I have created groups that indicate the location and was hoping to use that in the alert action. I am triggering on Nodes so now I know I cannot use any group variables. Is there any other way to obtain the site location and post it in the alert action?

There are a couple of ways i can think of, but then I cant suggest accurately without understanding more on how your environment is built.

1. Rather than Groups use a Node custom property. Create a new custom property and populate the location information. You can use the node custom property location custom property on your alert.

2. If your node name has location information on it like say for example the node that you are monitoring is something like XXXABC001 where ABC is the location, we can have another alert defined to automate the population of location custom attribute, manual intervention of updating the custom property is not required, provided location is part of your node naming nomenclature.

Let me know if point 2 is how the node names are in your environment, if node name doesnt contain location information and if it inconsistent in that case location custom property needs to be populated manually or entered manually.

In theory it is possible that a node could be part of N groups, so its less of a unique variable and more of a list from a data perspective. It's more likely custom property would be the way to go, and you can create a dynamic group and filter the group based on that custom property. You can also create an alert to automate populating that custom property, so you don't have to maintain the data entry

As @xam mentioned, pulling a group in a macro is fine, but you will probably have multiple groups per device sometimes

If you happen to just have one group per node you can do

${N=SWQL;M=select m.Container.Name
from orion.ContainerMembers m
where m.MemberPrimaryID = '${N=SwisEntity;M=NodeID}'
and m.MemberEntityType = 'Orion.Nodes'}

If you have many, but you know the sort you want, you could add some WHEREs to that, and maybe a TOP 1

${N=SWQL;M=select top 1 m.Container.Name
from orion.ContainerMembers m
where m.MemberPrimaryID = '${N=SwisEntity;M=NodeID}'
and m.MemberEntityType = 'Orion.Nodes'
and m.container.name like 'Fishing%'}

If you have many, and you want to grab the lot, you'd have to do wacky stuff like

${SQL:SELECT m.Container.Name+Char(9)+Char(10) from orion.ContainerMembers m where m.MemberPrimaryID = '${N=SwisEntity;M=NodeID}' and m.MemberEntityType = 'Orion.Nodes' UNION SELECT ' ' AS Caption For XML path('')}

Where that's switching language, glueing a column into a cell, and then bolting on a "dont-error-on-null" so it doesnt spit your code back

Why the wacky stuff? Macros in solarwinds want to return one cell, anything bigger than that and it'll ignore it and just give the first cell
