Linux Service Status monitoring

Greetings All.

Monitoring Red Hat Enterprise 8 servers.  Currently polling with SNMP.

Given a requirement to monitor service status for Red Hat SSO service ("Single Sign On").

Using Solarwinds Linux Process Monitor I can't find anything that looks like rhsso / rhssod.

Researching the issue - it appears that...

1) polling with SNMP Red Hat MIB surfaces Process Names, not Service Status

2) to monitor actual Service Status I need to use a script monitor with some kind of SSH authentication.

I welcome any input from the community to validate / correct 1 and 2 above, plus if anyone has insight into monitoring Red Hat SSO service. My guess is that the SSO service can generate any number of processes, so process monitoring not a good way to go with RHSSO.

Hi Everybody.

Further research and input from team members provided answers to the question:

1. the Red Hat SSO process (in fact, a lot of Linux applications) run inside of the Java process.  
   1. to isolate specific application within the Java process use the Solarwinds Linux process monitor with a command line filter
   2. example, if my app runs from /opt/myapp-1.0  I would monitor Java with command line filter '/opt/myapp-1.0'
   3. testing so far the monitor works as expected.
   4. note that in general it is preferable to fulfill a monitoring requirement with SNMP rather than using an ssh login / shell script. Principle of least privilege. SNMP = read only - low risk; SSH = usually quasi admin permissions - more risk 
2. Btw in a Red Hat Linux environment you can retrieve the output of a shell script with SNMP using Extended SNMP.  Internet search Red Hat Extended SNMP for details.  Note that you have to be good at defining custom SNMP OIDs to make this work.
