We currently use custom properties on our SolarWinds nodes to help us group nodes for reporting, automation and other functions. At present we're manually adding devices to SolarWinds as they're brought onto the network and manually defining the custom properties at that time. However, we are expanding our use of SolarWinds and are reaching a point where we need to automate the discovery/onboarding of network devices. The automated discovery functionality seems to work fine but leaves us with having to define the custom properties manually.
With prior network management platforms we were able to parse the SNMP location field to define some of the attributes that the platform needs to monitor the node.
I’ve seen a few other (currently locked) threads that discuss the potential for functionality similar to what we’re looking for but I haven’t seen any indications that this functionality has been added.
My questions… Has SolarWinds introduced functionality that would allow us to ingest & parse a SNMP location string and use that data to populate custom properties for a node? If not, has anyone scripted this type of functionality that wouldn’t mind sharing how they accomplished it? I have a rough idea of how one might accomplish it but any specifics from someone who has already done it would be helpful.
Thank you!
