Unable to Write to File

Hi,

Been using Kiwi syslog for years. Just installed NG on a 2019 server to test. We are unable to get the 'write to file' action to work. Clicking the 'Browse' button while setting up the action does nothing. Entering a relative path of 'Logs\something.txt' and applying generates no file (or 'Logs' folder) in the installation directory. Any ideas?

thank you for providing feedback! Unfortunately, in first version we could not allow browsing to other places. The file should be created in the install directory. If its not happening, please contact the support team for troubleshooting purposes. We will need to review logs, whether there is any other issue preventing it.

Hi,

Support was able to point us to the location the files get written. It is inside the hidden ProgramData folder on the root of the OS drive. As I'm sure you can appreciate, this is a less than ideal location to be writing the logs to. Hoping v1.x can help with this in the not too distant future. Thanks.

The default location is if user dont change file path creation in the action Log to File. Feel free to experiment and change the file path to different. Absolute paths are also supported and you can choose any path on the server.

I can confirm that this LogToFile action bug is still present with KSS NG 1.2.1.4.

Regardless of where you install KSS, the system creates LogToFile files under the hidden Windows folder C:\ProgramData\..., if you use the RELATIVE path which is the default for the action.

Undocumented solution is to type an ABSOLUTE path into the file location field.

Example: \KiwiSyslogNG\Logs\...

And yes - the BROWSE button on that screen still does not work either.

I thought for sure I was having a mental breakdown this morning when, for the first time, I interacted with Kiwi Syslog-NG web UI and...well nothing seems to work.

Reminds me, it is like the 1st generation of HTML5 based web apps from 2010; I remember sitting for a product demonstration of early versions of SPLUNK, and the HTML5 web GUI implementation was so bad, and still is today, that I never recommend it.
