Make Phone Call When an Alert is Triggered?

Can SolarWinds make a phone call, i.e. to oncall cell phone, when certain alerts are triggered? We would like them to be granular i.e. only make a phone call when certain types of alerts are triggered and/or for certain devices. Thanks in advance for your help

Solarwinds doesn't offer a service like that, but there are several vendors who do that. You can send a notification email or API call from Orion to trigger phone calls or other layers of notifications and escalations that are handled in those platforms. In the past I've used Mir3 Onsolve and Pagerduty for that kind of functionality.

Have you considered sending a text message instead? You can text directly to a persons cell phone.

You can send out an SMS text message to a phone number natively by just using the gateway of the telecom provider. - Set up Orion SMS or email alerts (solarwinds.com) for more details. For example, we send out key alerts to a phone on T-Mobile by using the email alert and sending it out to 10DigitPhoneNumber@tmomail.net. This is a free option.

Pagerduty would be great for that indeed. If you need something self-hosted, where the person acknowledge the alarm via a phone call, a Davicom Cortex unit could be the brain that execute that. It's really powerful and you can have multiple automation processes done. Depending on your business rules complexity, some custom integration would be required but nothing's unfeasible.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. We're already generated texts and emails but there are a lot of text and email alerts that the oncall person doesn't need to worry about so they silence them at night otherwise they'd be woken up every 5 minutes. We would like to make a phone call instead. We would also like to be able to configure which alarms for which devices will trigger the phone call, and be able to change the phone number to whoever is oncall. It would be nice to be able to create a phone number list and just pick the one for whoever is on call, or better yet on a scheduled basis. Oncall is on a weekly basis so manually setting the phone number would be OK.

Currently investigating OpsGenie, PagerDuty, and BetterStack. They all claim to allow phone calls and of course they all claim to do everything the others do but better. We'll see... Let me know if anyone has any experience with these products and an opinion, suggestion, or other recommendaations. Thanks!

You can leverage custom properties on Nodes, Interfaces, groups to discriminate which alarms gets triggered during a specific period. As an example, you set a "Is_Critical" boolean custom property on a node. You use this custom property in the trigger conditions of an alarm. (i.e if Is_Critical = True AND off-hours THEN call).

As for the oncall rotation and numbers, it is usually managed in your PagerDuty or equivalent system.
