Issue with View by Device Type

I have seen other articles about this before from 12 years ago, but this is still a problem.

Every time SolarWinds reboots, it returns to the settings for the version of SolarWinds.

Before we had issues with Cisco Nexus switches identifying as Wireless Controllers, now it is the newer Cisco Catalyst 9300's.

Is there a way to set (default) for the device type that survives a reboot of SolarWinds?

I'm not sure I 100% follow your problem but yes, you can set the default view type by 'device type'.

Go to Settings > All Settings and scroll down to the Views section and then click on Views by Device Type. Once that page loads, scroll through to find your device type e.g. Catalyst 9300 and then set it to your preferred view. Once done, scroll to the bottom and hit submit.

We had a similar issue with Fortinet firewalls. But because they have an embedded wireless controller, then technically SolarWinds isn't wrong. As we never use (or haven't so far) the embedded controller then identifying them as WLCs is silly. We made the global change via the 'Views by Device Type' page.

It's not just you, I've had this same problem before in many environments where my choices in the device views didn't stick permanently. My work around was just to make a sql job that sets all the values on the relevant table how I wanted them.

Yes, I know I can change the device type, but it resets after a reboot of the servers. So then we're stuck with misidentified devices a gain till I go change them.

The bug is changes do not survive a reboot. Also, every revision changes the settings to some devices to show other incorrect device types.

Nexus switches were not WLC or ASA's.

If the changes survived a reboot, I'd be fine with whatever things they did.

I recently had some Windows servers go down. T he server team saw them identified as "ASA" and sent them to the Network team. They were clearly servers. But for some reason, Solarwinds identified them as "Unknown Device Type" which in the version we are running was set to ASA. Why? No clue.

Unknown should be set to "(default)" for all versions and patches of Solarwinds. JMO. If someone from SolarWinds can come up with a vlid reason why Unknown should be an ASA, I'd *love* to hear it!

Ahh gotcha... sounds like a real pain in the bum! I presume you've raised a ticket via support and they've been their usual 'chocolate teapot' of help?

I can't say I've witnessed the device type resetting, or is that reverting, in our 5 SolarWinds environments, but that equally doesn't mean jack.
