As soon as you hit the threshold - you will be notified .. if you are running a trial .. I believe you have unlimited nodes you can add... so yes, you will not see any type of notification until you hit "a" threshold. Again .. .personal experience.

Do you have logging enabled on that switch? Does the log present anything? It passes authentication, then it fails authentication.... it is starting to sound like a "buggy" switch or software... you may want to upgrade / downgrade the IOS software.
