solid post for sure! I use tcpdump more than wireshark; yet still rarely enough that I have to google commands that I continually forget Bookmarked for reference. I look forward to next week!

I would say that #2 and #3 are both good ideas. With the simplicity of the table in the DB, it shouldn't be too hard to create a stored procedure on the back-end to remove the individual node if the user chooses 'remove' out of option 3. That would be ideal to me. -ZackM Loop1 Systems: SolarWinds Training and Professional…

I work from home, so it's pretty boring as far as the room goes. But my schedule makes it feel like this most days...

Gotta love those professional services! But seriously, in my experience, items 2 and 3 are more key than anything else. Without proper buy-in, you can spend the better part of a year working your tail off for a product that is really not utilized at all, or is blatantly hated by staff and/or management. I would say that…

BINGO! That's exactly correct sir. I think the preference would be something like this (with color highlighting and maybe an icon as well), but I am sure that UX would have their opinions too. (meech )

clicked too dang fast while listening to a mtg. don't thwack and work folks, you'll lose out on valuable points!

Having the unique situation where I can see monitoring tools in multiple enterprise environments weekly, I would personally rank the following: * Ease of use for the NOC * High level of detail available to the upper level engineers * Ease of reporting and trending for management and stakeholders * Customization options…

P2V challenges for a database are generally the same as any other server in my experience. Back end hardware requirements + actual transition (down time). I think that I have seen more problems providing the proper storage/CPU/memory specs than I have convincing a client that XX amount of outage would be required. But I…

The real trick is when you start warehousing your SQL and getting multi-year trends. I've seen environments that have SSRS reports setup that are used to trend failure rates down to specific modules within the network gear. Oh to be a fly on the wall during the meetings with those vendors... "So you sold me ABC 3 years ago…

ecklerwr1 and mr.e - yes, Windows Firewall is an unfortunate requirement to setup WinRM Jfrazier - you do not have to accept messages from any IP address. That probably could have been explained a bit better. You have the option to do any IP through a wildcard (*), or you can name specific trusted hosts as well. jkump…

IF you have the time, sure. A manual discovery allows you to get extremely granular, avoids assumptions, and refreshes some of the basic skills of network engineering. However, I'm just going to leave this here... NTM 2.2 Beta1 - Building a Better Network Diagram Tool

Very interesting post. For me, I can see and appreciate both sides of the fence when it comes to having my data tracked. However, I tend to 'assimilate' under the pretense that the admins should be taking a dose of their own medicine. Now, concerning the local, state, and federal-level tracking from the government... that…

I've seen that before. I am more interested in the ability to turn on/off a "rolling" baseline per component monitor. Grabbing a single baseline metric is nice. However, what happens when your application gets 30 new users? Being able to recalculate the metrics every week (or day), per component monitor, brings a new level…

they're unfortunately not as tasty as you'd hope

Funny enough, the only place we had these 'discussions' was in a place where our network team was geographically separated from the server team(s) by several states... and we had FULL end-to-end monitoring. Communication is key!

congrats and welcome!

I love that idea. For us, it's sometimes a hard sell as our calendar stays pretty full and it would be cost prohibitive to send a large amount of our workforce out like that. However, we do have semi-annual meetings for the company where we get some training done in breakout teams. Certifications are only as good as the…

Lots of good posts in this thread. For me, ignoring all other things, it comes down to one point: * How is the FCC going to enforce these regulations without having access to view your browsing history? I'm not saying it can't happen, and I'm definitely not saying I've read everything there is to read on the subject. But,…

First, I love network atlas for elevation diagrams and some crazy custom stuff. However when speaking about a traditional topology diagram, for some reason I just cannot find a replacement for a diagram on paper or whiteboard. There's just something about the ability to flip back and forth between pieces of paper that I…

I've seen a good amount of success with teams that use internal wikis or SharePoint to create "RTS" (return to service) articles for apps and devices. They then place links in their custom properties for these items and pass those links as variables in the alerts. It helps a lot with the Tier I folks, and keeps a lot of…
