I would be inclined to think that if you have a manager making decisions based on potential IT projects, without requiring data surrounding costs, you might have a bad time. Personally, I really hate thinking about how much things cost. I strongly feel that knowing cost can bias an opinion for an engineer and, if at all…

I try to follow the ideas above and keep learning new things as much as possible. I don't really learn well in a classroom setting however, so I generally find myself reverse-engineering things to figure out their inner-workings (I'm looking at you ',orionreport' files!)

Welcome to the club! Congrats to all

Thanks jhynds! That looks really good. What are the chances we can get a description of the connectors along with that? One of the most common feedback items I hear from clients is that the generic nature of a good number of the connectors makes understanding their intended purpose somewhat cryptic. Also, some of them…

Just a head's up, today's hint is off by a bit, the answer is between 3:00 and 4:00 in the video.

I spend a good amount of time on an almost weekly basis discussing alert design and theory with my various clients. Generally speaking over the years, I have found that changing the subject line of your emails (as mentioned several times above) tends to be the absolute most effective process. However, effective is by no…

Oh spare time... I do miss her.

bookmarked again. excellent post sir.

Nice anecdote! I come across things like this every once in a while as I am travelling between clients. Usually, I can get someone to give me 5 minutes of their time to try and win them over with some flash of automation. But every so often, the true dinosaurs are found and are just not open to the new world order. Fun…

For the majority of the clients I see: 1) MS SQL and Oracle 2) 50/50; this usually depends on the size of the company 3) SAM, but I would LOVE it if they moved towards adding DPA 4) Maintenance plans would be the best, but honestly I don't see them pre-established as often as I would like...

This seems intuitive, but is actually a great point. I have seen a LOT of environments hosting their tools within their virtual environment. Sometimes even on the same host as their critical apps!

yes I think questions like this are easiest answered by "yes, I want all of that". Working with the amount of clients we see, it is hard to say that one solution would benefit everyone. What I would like to see would be an Active Alerts resource that allows for the following: * Show all active alerts * Show all active…

I'm personally a huge fan of the VNQM product. Generally, the clients I have worked with use either IP SLA OR NTA. I of course try to refocus their attention on using a multitude of tools instead of depending on a single. But, to be honest, I have never really thought about using UnDPs... (I'm a little ashamed to admit…

Generally, the clients I work with fall into 1 of 2 groups: * No retention levels have been identified, so they stay at the default for whatever product they are working with. * Security compliance has listed a very particular set of standards for log retention, so we right-size storage and work with that. Ultimately,…

I like to start with a LARGE cup of coffee, and then open all of my target retail sites in chrome with an auto-refresh cycle of every 3 seconds so I can snipe the good deals

Clouds are where storms happen... (just saying ) Maybe from a monetary, big-picture outlook on a spreadsheet it makes sense to move logs to the cloud. But it only takes one incident to make all of those 'savings" a moot point. I would always lean towards investing in the infrastructure and talent to keep security internal.

Well booourns. Got today's wrong. Like others have said, it's a tricky beast.

I'm a HUGE fan of small startups and the 'geek culture' that results from a relaxed atmosphere and breeds innovation and a fun work environment. That being said, these same environments are generally the WORST when it comes to standards. For me, one of the best compromises I found was in the lab environment for one of the…

Hotel WiFi, home high-speed, cell phone hotspot everywhere else We VPN to our corporate network and utilize Office365. Works pretty well for us, but then again we are a company of IT professionals, so I assume there has been a lot of tinkering from each Field Engineer to get it just the way they want it. -ZackM Loop1…

This is solid gold! (Really one of the best blog posts in a while here, and they are almost always amazing!) I would echo what others have mentioned about training the end users, and then add a little snippet to that: * How are you training your engineers? Not everyone is a VoIP guru, and tribal knowledge can be seriously…
