My company we have a corporate center and state distribution centers ("House") that run semi-autonomously (because of state liquor laws). However, we have a One-IT whereas a tech in Delaware can help a user in Arizona. Nonetheless, I've been here 7 years now and each House will setup their little own little IT operation…

I believe that quote is where the author Terry Pratchett got his inspiration for his Discworld series... If you are familiar with that.

I could stand to see a reduction in our choices of cooking oil from 47 to 5 or so. :-) I remember going to grocery stores with my mom in the 70's and waiting outside with my .25$ comic books that compelled me to help her with loading and unloading the groceries (Remember leaving the grocery cart at the curb and having the…

Right now, I would hesitate being a clown anywhere in the U.S. This country can't take a joke anymore (no political assertions meant by this).

So is the intent of Cloud Backup to backup to other locations on the Cloud? Do you backup to the same provider? Or do you backup to other providers for safekeeping?

Thanks!!! However... I was enjoying the wity banter of a Thwack community going... slowly... and utterly... insane!!! DOES!!! NOT!!! COMPUTE!!!

Personally, I am all in favor of moving to the Cloud. I want my department tog et out of the datacenter business. It isn't worth the headaches anymore. The same applies to hardware. I long for the day when my applications rise above the hardware and administration becomes (somewhat) seamless. The previous leadership at my…

My Network/Systems team follows this methodology more and more. But many times I find that the royal "We" are in the dark because we are not properly monitoring a server, SAN, VMware host, network device, application, etc. fully. There is still that one critical piece of data that we need to go looking for to help us…

Uhh adatole. DevOps DC is sold out. I am on standby. The Solarwinds pass doesn't even move me to the top of the list! I'm trying my best...

Was this article written with the mindset that there was a Beginning - Middle - End? I see Monitoring as a lifecycle. The lifecycle could be an enterprise, a datacenter, a VM Host, or an application. But it never ends. It never, ever, ever... ends!

I am becoming a big fan of one going one with one vendor, whenever possible, for as mush infrastructure as possible so that we can consolidate dashboards and streamline support. I will give up functionality for efficiency in most cases.

You're able to step away? Train me Oh Wise One! Show me the way!

How do I verify if I received the points? I filled out another survey for SAM for 250 pts roughly at the same time.
-
Were the points awarded for the survey? I don't believe that I have received mine yet.
-
They didn't let me in. I'm sitting outside in the rain (figuratively speaking)....
-
The points for the contest were awarded today. I assume that the points for the survey will be awarded on Monday?

You still handing out badges if we post a picture? I am working on having Walter Iooss flown in to take mine.

Eons ago Microsoft sent the IE 4 upgrade pack it had a swarmy dude talking to you with a cool background that resembled some swanky 90's hang-out with snazzy music. I miss when desktop IT was light-hearted. :-(

@"SWMonITor" We have nothing but good things to say about SRM. We have 2 DR sites, a slew of hosts, and up to 80 servers being replicated. Like you we do not extend VLAN's. Servers receive different IP's when failed over. You can preset the DR IP's into SRM ahead of time. This will save oodles of times when failing over.…

The micro chip thing. I am shocked that this was able to fly this day and age. The risk and insurance implications of such intrusive device leaves a company wide open for a plethora of lawsuits. (Remember, you don't have to win. You just have to settle) As for worst internet in America... but Verizon's coverage map???

I concur...

An analogy that was initially lost on me was the pain possibly suffered when crossing over that fence. And the anticipated pain to be experienced when trying to cross back. It can be enough to prevent someone from returning...

Ya know... I still miss my Egghead software store for my Mac 610e. I loved that thing! And thanks for pointing out that we have waaaay too many national food days. Obscene... As for Hell, it is a town in Michigan and my co-worker provides me with directions frequently. :-)

All of this talk of MVP Summit on Thwack and Twitter this past week continues to make me do a double-take. Wha? "Did I miss a big Thwack event?" "How was I forgotten?" "Will I still get Thwack points?" And then I remember it was a Microsoft event... and all is well.

"Red: [narrating] Sometimes it makes me sad, though... lindsey.serrano being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much…

So many that they are beginning to stick to my shoes...

I am by no means technical (anymore), I am now a “Vision Guy.” Is there any way to insert some intelligence into the “Tags” functionality so that variations of “Tags” can be collated into a grouping? And I am imagining for more than just SolarWinds products, I am thinking of Cisco, Juniper, Microsoft, Aerohive (Please!),…

My company went with a “Premixed/Premeasured” solution. As we continue to expand we are chasing the bottleneck with our storage solution. Disks, controllers, network, backplanes, and so on. Our expectations are not clearly defined so it is difficult to produce quantifiable data. Any "Red's" on a graph/chart stand out…

Man, I didn't win.... :-( Congrats to SoftwareONE! We are all in elite company. :-)

Yes, always be learning. If you want to broaden your horizons you have several points to consider: * What do you want to do? What interests you? * What's hot in the industry right now? * What does your employer really need? * What's your weak spot? What do you want to bolster up? * Is there something completely new? And so…
