Dear Network, While I am not your admin, I am fine that you are with, and happier, another. Always know that I am never far... watching, waiting... for that next alert to raise. I will then, as I have always done, make sure your admin is treating you right. Sleep well, my dear network, sleep well under my watchful eye! You…

We are about ready to replace our IBM storage system and we are looking at AFA. We have a ridiculously high transactional SAP database on SQL Server 2014 and our company is growing. We see I/O issues occasionally but we know what the future holds if we stay on what we have now.

Greetings from Austin. Great sessions so far. I really enjoyed the session: Optimizing the Data Lifecycle - A Monitoring with Discipline Series. As I am living that pain currently. THWACKcamp! THWACKcamp! THWACKcamp!

I'll be in the front row waving my hand like Arnold Horshack... "Eww! Ewww! Pick me! Pick me!" Yes... I just dated myself...

I am indifferent towards the TSA. I've been flying since I was 6 and I have always remembered some type of pre-boarding screening process. If more technology was pumped into the screening process it could be a much less "harassing" experience for sure, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I've heard of "potential…

My hiring techniques aim for contributions to the team and the bottom line. Those are tangibles and measurable. But I also value personality. I want a team of different personality types, perspectives, backgrounds, experiences, and such. I am a strong proponent in diversity. As for assimilation of new talent... I'll give…

VMAN... I want VMAN. I have a pretty big Orion landscape right now so putting VMAN in as a POC isn't a problem. It's getting the credentials and access to our virtual landscape that is a challenge. I am not part of the Network team and I do not have admin rights to anything. I monitor, audit, report, forecast, and call…

Great article(s). I have been using them as roadmaps for getting security off the ground at my company. All the bosses-with-doors are envisioning grandiose security measures in place by EOY. I am still busy getting logs sent to the right location and implementing a Patch Mgmt strategy. A lot of Thwack articles have served…

mikesky We are not alone!

Get ready folks... this exercise is a commitment. I've participated the previous two years and it does ask a lot of you but you will find it to be rewarding.

Except for the movie, Paddington 2. It was one of the few movies ever to score a perfect 100% on RT. That movie was wonderful. It was the movie the world didn't know it needed. So RT isn't always bad... Paddington 2 (2018) - Rotten Tomatoes

Speaking of Black Mirror what do you think of the new season? I have only watched 2 episodes so far. I really liked the first episode, but after time it is beginning to wear off on me. I didn't like Crocodile much. I hear the last episode is excellent.

Precisely! (see what I did there?) These numbers have very little context. 300 million email accounts got hacked at Yahoo! How many of them haven't been accessed in 10-15 years? These credit card # hacks. How many of them are dead accounts? These reports lack the necessary perspective that we need to better understand the…

Hey now! That's a lifelong commitment to misery there. The Orioles don't allow me to be happy.

After wrestling with Patch Mgr for the better part of a year, and ultimately losing, my tip: Get out of IT. :-(

Congrats on the positive life change. Fortune favors the bold!

Security vs. Compliance is an important lesson for many to learn. One does not automatically offer the other. In fact, they are parallel paths. I work for a cash only, privately held business. We have very little compliance regulations to adhere to. Seasoned IT veterans, especially those that have worked in the…

WordPerfect? Bravo!!! I have a few old ones myself. I was in the first wave of Novel 4.1 CNA's. After that I went cert crazy with MCSE 4.0. I remember TechMentor in Orlando, 2001. I was one of 11 people who were standing when the keynote speaker called out the MCSE+I's. (Yeay! Site Server) But perhaps my proudest…

Yea... that movie was T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E!!! I turned it off after about 20-30 minutes. I was coerced into watching that much of it and then my wife fell asleep so I turned it off right away.

I have Scottish and English family. The feelings are mixed across the board on this decision. We will all bear witness to a dramatic shift in the global economy, and I suspect the final death knell in the once great British Empire (which I am a subject of)/ The timing of this along with the U.S. election is just uncanny.

I read an interesting counterpoint to the Net Neutrality debate. Mind you, I don't necessarily agree with all of it's positions, but thought provoking nonetheless. The net neutrality farce - NY Daily News

Oh thank god! I needed something to do...

I submitted an entry. Just curious. Was the deadline Est, CST, or PST?

Interesting article and comments. Our 2nd generation virtual environment is way over-spec'ed for our needs. We learned our lessons from our 1st generation environment and dealing with all the bottlenecks and performance constraints. Painful.

Interesting stuff... reading about it more and more. My company isn't there yet. Still have some clean-up of legacy junk so that we can homogenize our platform and start moving towards full immersion.
