1. reminds me of the company I work at. We are a privately held company with very few requirements so leadership lived under a false sense of security for years. The reality was that old hardware was being stolen and sold on the gray market, rampant viruses & malware, inappropriate web access during the business day, and…

ARGH! For the 5th straight month I got the last question of the month WRONG!

Now I know what happiness looks like. And must feel like!

I've been reading about containers for what seems to be like 2 years now. There is plenty of buzz around this technology but I can't say I have shook hands of anyone who has it in place. I have no official position on containers as of yet, but as a IT Business Continuity Professional I am intrigued. Right now, in my little…

I was involved with at least one of these a week at my old job, a managed web hosting provider. "Blameless Reporting" can sometimes rely heavily on spin when preparing an AAR for an angry customer. An old boss taught me a lesson that I still use today: When determining blame you first look at the process. If the process is…

"The Word" always reminds me of... (edited) Two notes of the chord, that's our full scope But to reach the chord is our life's hope And to name the chord is important to some So they give a word and the word is Om

Where are feeling the pain of lackadaisical Data Mgmt is in theproject for out migration to inmemory DB. All that "junk" and superfluous data that we ignored for years is coming back to haunt us in licensing. FUN FACT: Inmemory licensing is based on the size of your data. And you can multiply that by up to 4: PRD, Pre-PRD,…

Interesting perspective. Those three letters could stand for anything. There is a site somewhere on the 'Net that lists all of the humorous and deprecating definitions of what SAP could stand for. :-) But one thing is for sure that SAP is a lot more than "business software."

We are fortunate here being completely virtualized and using VMware Site Recovery Manager. We have tested DR several times and we are able to restore with >2hr RTO. The only manual intervention we need to make is creating TEMPDB. We have not yet mastered the automation when the server comes online and our TEMPDB is way too…

PCI offers excellent job security but at a cost to one's mental state. I do not miss implementing and adhering to PCI at all. It was such a battle with the DEV and Product Marketing team.

Mad props!!! However... in the 2nd pic it looks like you're sucking wind some. :-) Rock the retro Solarwinds garb!

I found this interesting article about people who wear loud and outrageous socks! SolarWinds should be out in front of this: https://wakeupyourmind.net/life/people-who-wear-crazy-socks-are-more-brilliant-creative-and-successful/

Two major factors prevent us from going full-on Cloud with our mission-critical apps: * Control - We want control of our apps, our underlying infrastructure, our facility housing them, etc. We want to know that our mission critical apps are sleeping peacefully every night and not in the hands of strangers. Our apps will…

Allow me to demonstrate how I have a firm grasp on the obvious. These problems are not exclusive the military or the government. The private sector is getting racked over how to secure the IoT. Right now it's the Wild West with danger and charlatans lurking in every dark corner.

Hold the phones! I officially doth protest! My wife caught me on to this one. How can a tournament of great captains of the high seas take place without the great Captain Hook? "Save me, Smee!" Impossible!!! Have you guys figured out yet I am exposed to way too much kid's cartoons yet?

We went through a merger right around the same time we moved to O365. Not all of our affiliates, for business reasons, immediately moved over. So when I went to engage the infrastructure team for a DR test completely oblivious to the fact that we weren't all the way in the Cloud. Details. Dirty, dirty, details have kept us…

OMG! I just remembered one of the most egregious attempts by Hollywood to dazzle us with IT during the 90's. How did we all forget this one? I won't give the movie title, I will just leave everyone with a screenshot. How hilarious was this? Who else was laughing out loud in the theater? I know I was...

I am liking the new digs... :-)

Full-time job? HA! I also manage the SAP Basis, Authorizations Security teams, NetSec, and corporate monitoring. I wish for a full-time job but I love all the other things I do.

Seriously guys... When does the good news start rolling back in? I'm starting to get a case of the gloomies.
-
Wouldn't that be nice? But in the absence of that we must make the environment as "stupid user" proof as possible.
-
Excellent! This allows us to give training to others and pass on the basic tasks to junior staff. The value of "101's"

Can't believe we are nearing the end of this inspiring exercise. (Sidenote: It has caused me to completely me rewrite the blog I am currently working on) Honestly, my brain hurts a wee bit from all of this contemplating. But maybe that has this to do with the cruise control mode I am in being between Christmas and New Year.

Nice points. Thwack is the first community I have fully invested in, personal or professional. And it is paying off in dividends. I can't stress how important it is to get involved in with the online community and user groups. Your knowledge, and your career, can go in so many different directions as a result.
-
I agree ecklerwr1. I do not see them as a commodity yet. Besides, there is too much volatility and growth in this market to obtain a comfort level for commodity status...if that makes any sense. Not that I ma much of a business-minded IT guy but I see this market as a 800 yard dash, not a sprint and not exactly a pacer,…

To add to your list of basics... help educate your non-technical friends. The line between personal and business emails is very thin and easy to traverse. Educated people form a "community immunity" which will contain any outbreaks.

Sooo...I've been on Thwack for close to 3 years and I never knew about this mission since this week. (Duh!) I just went through, of the many, tasks and I am pretty sure I have completed them. Honestly, I am surprised that I haven't completed them by happenstance during my 3 years. My question is... How do I know that I…

Last year we rolled out Solarwinds LEM. Did you guys know that EVERYTHING creates logs? Yea, I did too. But there is... SO.MUCH.LOGS!!! The early stages of LEM was like my first foray into JonFacienda narrated NFL Flims clips on YouTube. It never stops...
