Not in to developing and had not heard about containers. Something worth investigating and learning more.

It doesn't really matter what you call it, your information is on the net whether you put it there or an agency you deal with puts it there. Just search public records and see what you find, you won't believe it.

I agree it all goes hand in hand as they compliment each other.

It would be nice if SolarWinds offered an IPAM lite where companies could install a licensed version where the limitations were on the number of networks and IP Addresses which could be tracked. This would allow companies to start using the software for a greater period than evaluation software, see the benefit, get hooked…

Boaty McBoatface, interesting. Democracy was not really meant to be popularity contests for the uninformed. Constituents are supposed to care enough to educate themselves on the issues of the day and vote for the candidate who most closely represents them. Event though we are a republic not a democracy, we have no one to…

I was wondering if my submission worked and how it would be handled. Thanks for the clarification maria.bungau,

Good article. You can't have it all. There are constraints that often cannot be overcome. Something will always be reduced, limited, or cut. A key to success is staying ahead of the competition for each SLA area.

Interesting articles. The Data USA site is pretty neat. Keep them coming.

Good article. I think log retention is site specific based on local administrative and security requirements. If you don't tailor log retention to your specific environment, get buy in from those who use or potentially use the data, you will end up failing to meet site requirements when the time comes.

Sounds like management engineers who order hardware and software without consulting the SME's, and then they wonder why it doesn't integrate well.

I totally agree. Even though I don't administer UNIX systems anymore the knowledge I learned comes in handy all the time, from administering McAfee Firewalls to Administering ONTAP, IOS and NXOS. Just last week I was working with a co-worker who has his CCNP, I was searching the running config in a way he had never seen.…

So as I see it the Generalist was Jack of all Trades, Master of None (Backbone of Federal IT). I don't see that disappearing in the Federal realm, I believe they must adapt to the current Federal push and become Jack of all Trades and Master of Some. Call me old school, but I never see every position filled in Federal IT,…

Having used other products I agree SolarWinds is far easier to execute. Having been acquired do you think they will change their philosophy and approach?

Thanks, I will resubmit.

The Appstack really give you insight into the details.

Me too Christopher Good

That sounds like a good idea.

If you love what you do it doesn't feel like work.. Have fun and get to know your coworkers. Have team building exercises, like lunch bowling, creating thwack videos, etc. Be self motivated to continue your education outside of work, don't wait for your company to pay for your education, invest in yourself.

Your not being a pessimist. I would say you sound paranoid, but considering I agree with your assessment I would call it Trust but Verify.

If your going to upload your logs use a secure protocol like secure tcp syslog. Also make sure the logging server has been locked down as well as other security practices in place, like HIDS and NIDS as well as an enterprise firewall.

Whatever tools a company uses its better to monitor your web servers or any servers for that matter, than to have your customers coming to you to report problems. Being new to SolarWinds I am finding it has a lot of modules which provide monitoring and alerting capabilities, you just need to spend time configuring it…

Although I haven't had to deal with a system that would require the majority of blade resources I am sure they exist. Virtualization has come a long way since my first exposure running VMware on dell hardware. Good article, thanks for the presentations.

I agree to many alerts will just be ignored. Alerts need to be meaningful to the person receiving the alert. One useful one I have seen is hard drive space low alert which is very useful in knowing when your system is on the verge of shutting down because the drive space is full.

Good afternoon. I think the answer provided on today's question in the early morning answer was wrong. Did anyone else notice it marked the correct response as wrong? I would like to receive the days points for the correct answer. Thanks.

I couldn't agree more.

Calendar Updated.

Like the article, but I don't like the idea of having data sent automatically to a third party. That to me is losing control, it may sound nice until it is exploited and unintended files are being sent without your knowledge or permission.

Clear in house first. Meaning--Do a thorough check of your own area before you point the finger in someone else's direction. Used in sentence--Shop motto; Clear in house before passing the buck. Origin--Heard it from some old retired Navy guy, a marine (once a marine always a marine), and the Rock. Whoa network defender…

Just another reason why you have to keep your systems up to date with the latest patches.

Don't have much opportunity to get into the weeds of this subject, but the information is always good.
