I like the idea of automation as long as you still have a way get a real person when you need one.

Good article. I would like to add one perspective. As I am sure "everyone" has realized when a customer has a problem it is always the networks fault, I see it time and time again. However nine times out of ten it is not the network. In our shop we have adopted the policy of "clean in house first". We thoroughly…

Great tools I have used them numerous times when scripting. They really allow you to expand what you can do when scripting.
-
That is a good way to put. You get it.

Interesting article. I didn't make it to the RSA, I wonder if they have them in different locations each year?
-
Any chance for a streaming feed to be setup?

I agree. Our system administrators look at SolarWinds products as a network tool. We continually try to show them the benefits. Maybe one day they will realize how they would benefit from the products.

Sidekicks sounds like a good bracket for next year.

I like your closing comment, security starts with awareness. That goes for the individual as well. Being aware of who your giving your information to and how they plan on securing it should be one of the first questions you ask before handing over your information. If they plan on communicating with you over the internet…

Seems like a lot of work to develop the challenge, only to realize your questions have multiple correct answers without credit. What are the chances of them correcting it?

Slippery slope, privacy over security. Where does it stop?

Coming out of a law enforcement career I developed a thorough investigative ability. In law enforcement you want to solve the mystery of the crime (you don't want to give up). Troubleshooting and investigating are very similar skills (you want to solve the problem). Computers were a hobby for me since the late 80's, and I…

1. SQL 2. It is left up to System Admins 3. None 4. Manual maintenance and Automated tasks.

That is one of the things I like about Solarwinds, their apps are very intuitive even the novice.
-
I agree.
-
Oh that makes sense. Although I finished my Network Security degree recently as well and my professors never talked about Gartner. Sounds like you professor is a good instructor. I will have to do some more investigating into Gartner to see how my organization can benefit from it. Thanks network defender

Well said I would agree.

If smaller companies design a good product you can bet they will be bought up quickly and be assimilated.
-
Very nice, thanks.

Some firewalls have DPI for applications. This helps ensure the ports used for access not only are authorized by policy but also meet the application standard to ensure the traffic is valid.
-
Really interesting information, I recently worked with a system that was having https redirects, Next time I will have to take your advice and check out the packet with wireshark.
-
It really shows how vulnerable information is in the digital age. Remember Ronald Regan's quote about the 9 most terrifying words, I'm from the government and I'm here to help. I have lost count how many people have told me they received a letter or email stating their personal information has been compromised by an…

NCM makes it so easy. Set a baseline and backup nightly.
-
I would have to agree. It may end up being a storage problem, but the complain always comes to networks first regardless of the real problem.
-
I see personal data becoming more vulnerable to compromise as more companies transition to online access, without providing the appropriate security measures to protect the data they hold.
-
Thanks for the article on DPI. I couldn't agree with you more especially on how valuable DPI is in troubleshooting a network.
-
I wonder what it would be like if I only had to specialize in one technology.
-
Good information, keeping up to date on the best security techniques, and using different passwords for different accounts so if one is breached all the accounts aren't compromised Is a good practice.
-
I agree, I see the generalist and versatilist descriptions remarkably similar. They both sound like the jack of all trades master of none. Most IT people I know fall into the category of specializing in several areas and mastering none. When the the boss needs a task completed there is no such thing as that's not in my job…

Very good article. Availability is part of actively monitoring your network and looking beyond the dashboard and under the hood to identify problems or potential problems before they impact reachability.
