I agree, also don't add metric data for the sake of a slide presentation, it needs to be useful to your audience.
-
I agree if you keep it simple and don't over monitor then you are more likely not to be fatigued by monitoring.
-
Definitely true. NO ONE is above reproach. It may be a little harder to catch a big fish but it is worth it.

Good article. It is also about preventative maintenance. Performing vendor best practices. Having procedures in place to stay on top of daily, weekly, monthly, and annual requirements like password changes, monitoring logs, license maintenance, etc...

I believe you really have to tailor the metric to your audience. All metrics business, technical have a purpose so decide what your trying to achieve and build it from there. It is like giving a speech, you must know who your audience is and tailor the information to them so they understand and can use the data collected…

I only had time to review the first link, Hilarious! Thanks.

I would like to attend one in the future, maybe if it is on the east coast.

Good job congratulations on the win.
-
You definitely need a starting point.
-
That is interesting that although physical security was prevalent for the building network security was overlooked from the physical aspect. Good article.

Should have been Kirk.

There is really no way around going virtual when you look at all the savings that come with it. Bottom line for companies is the cost and profit margins associated with running a business, and there are huge savings to capitalize on in going virtual.

Your plan is sound. I think you will find the experience of migration quite straight forward, and the benefits of virtualization are numerous.
-
No doubt. You would think integration and development work which benefits SolarWinds in areas such as purchasing, testing and bug identification would merit an a longer license period, with less restrictions for non production environments.

Continuous improvement is something everyone should strive for, not only in the network they maintain but also in their professional skills.

Help Desks often get a bad rap for having canned responses or scripts to follow. Help Desks are the first line of defense and have the ability to gather valuable troubleshooting information which can be used for problem resolution if and when tickets are elevated.

Well of course I would first take care of the people by providing a raise and adding to the engineering staff, as you know most of us are overworked, under paid and under staffed. Next I would upgrade the death star network infrastructure to the latest and greatest hardware/software, upgrade to hyper drives. Next I would…

Relevant information is important to identifying problems. Being able to retrieve more specific information with the right tools is better than generic information with little benefit. Good article.

If managed services budget covers the total for employee salaries it seems low. Could be where the saying you get what you pay for came from.
-
I agree. Don't accept information at face value. It is often given with little thought in hopes no one will question it or look for facts to back it up.
-
Good points on logging. If you collect everything no one is going to sift through all the garbage. Logging specific events is more productive.
-
Will you record any of it for later viewing?
-
Good article, you could add testing the change in an isolated environment if you site is lucky enough to have one.
-
That would be helpful.

Many people have no idea how much data is being collected on them daily. I just finished reading an article on the data Google maps is collecting on an individuals whereabouts when using Google maps. Like free Wifi people generally don't think about what they are giving up when they use the service someone is offering.…

Pretty good when you can get people to work 80% of the time.
-
tcpdump is a great tool for troubleshooting but to much information can clutter the output. Know what you want to capture before you capture the traffic and as network defender said filter, filter, filter.
-
Jay Snyder makes a good point for people new to security.
-
I agree, the cloud can be intimidating at first. The more exposure you have to it the more advantages you will see. You don't have to compromise security, continue to use best practices and stay up to date with the latest software updates.

On the surveys for the final week I did not see a place where we could input our username. How will the points be applied without the username input?
