I agree I would like to try patch manager.

Standards make everyone's life easier. I like to see standards in all aspects of IT, from server naming conventions to firewall rule naming, switch and router interface descriptions. You name it standards help clarify and organize a shop. I once worked with a person who thought as long as the cat5 cable was terminated same…

Right on the mark.

I agree also. Having started my IT career as a Unix/Solaris administrator I started shell scripting. Expanding into Windows and database administration I started to learn html and windows scripting. Now as Cisco Network Engineer/Firewall/NetApp administrator my previous skills come in handy all the time. Even though I…

I guess were still old school. Our logs are used in manual searches for troubleshooting and cursory reviews throughout the day.

Putting all your eggs into one basket can't be a bad thing, can it? I say lets network everything...

I agree it is when you don't think outside the box you are at a higher risk for getting hacked.

* Do you take baselines at all? Yes, Initial installation, prior to major changes. * What counters/metrics do you collect? software versions, memory connections speeds. * Do you baseline your applications during peak usage? Low usage? Month end? Not really doing anything with apps yet. * Do you rely solely on your…

Well said.

I think you could say the Versatilist is just the 2.0 version of the Generalist, with an upgrade and enhanced development in key areas either chosen by the Versatilist or driven by environment they are working in.

Congrats Jay Snyder

The Thwack team keeps it very interesting and fun, keep it up for 2016.

Proof in the form of reports is always better when trying to put emphasis on why something is the way it is.

My thoughts exactly.

Weekly meetings that sounds like a good idea.

I agree. There is a need for both, I see push data expanding. I like the idea of juniper telemetry, I would like to see Cisco expand there's.

The deciphering of regulations is key. You always find different interpretations of the intent of the reg.

I predict they are about 20% correct, healthcare and monitoring are my picks.

Of course not. Who doesn't look forward to retiring someday. Looking forward to retiring and being retired at work are not the same.
-
I couldn't agree more. Microsoft delivers patches for their patches, SCCM is nice but it is always best to patch in a non production environment first so you can work out the bugs.
-
Here is a thought, I have mentioned in the past in different forums. Clean in house first. In other words troubleshoot the problem with the team your on before you kick the can to another team. Credibility is lost when a team or individual constantly points the problem in another direction, only to find out it could have…

Make it two.

Enjoyable as usual, I predict they will have better predictions in the future.

I'm not sure I would classify the person you are describing as a Generalist, sounds more like a laziest. Defined as one going through the motions of coming to work, but not really working, collecting a paycheck waiting for the end of the day or the day they can retire. One who's thirst has been quenched. network defender…

Gartner is new to me. network defender where did you first learn of Gartner?

Like any good friendship years can melt away with one good, Hello, how are you?

Even though knowledge becomes obsolete, doesn't mean you still can't learn from it. It's like I tell my wife even though something is no longer being used in our house doesn't make it junk, I still might be able to use it in the future. Not to say I don't throw things out, I do, but I like being able to resurrect something…

Management needs to look at their time spent on the phone with poor help desk support to realize they don't want to be that company. If your customers don't get problem resolution quickly and painlessly, they won't be your customers for long.

I like the article, but I would have to agree with some of the previous comments. It seems like the five characteristics are more like the foundation to build from than advanced Network Monitoring. When it comes to the virtual environment I would like to know what others are using for advanced network monitoring.
