I remember those old days where updates were ONLY applied if absolutely necessary for a fix. Often they would break other things and were avoided because of the risk. IT has now gone the other way and updates come frequently and need to be applied (should be tested and vetted first) quickly to avoid other things breaking…

Collaboration really resonates with me. I've worked in environments that were very "silo" driven and some that were "everyone does everything." There are pro and con to both models and everything in between. But the problems can be overcome in any environment with good collaboration. Yes, it can be driven at the "grass…

Secure and sharing are difficult concepts to tie together effectively. Partly because of tech, partly because people are involved. The need to share is growing and the need for security is growing. Leading management to push for quicker implementation. For me, this is a case where training must be implemented, repeated and…

I do like DPA, as soon as I installed it I saw obvious things that needed fixing. However, I'm not the SQL guy so I took it to that team and was met with a very excited "Hmm, we'll take a look at it."

HEY, HEY, HEY, now stop that. I generally do the missions early in the day before things get out of hand. That means early as in when I'm not at my best - don't go asking us to think! (and by us I mean me!)

Nice article, thanks for posting. Your materials are always very thorough.

Pentagon drones acting in "packs." The Pentagon's Autonomous Swarming Drones Are the Most Unsettling Thing You'll See Today

Collaboration is king - I agree 100% and I'm always trying to make (whatever group I'm working with - my company, my customers, my life group, etc.) people work as a true team.

Of the three SDN is clearly on our roadmap. I'm glad to not be on the bleeding edge of this as the potential to be great is there, but then so is the potential to be a mess. When we do implement it will be with a clear understanding of the capabilities, features and limitations.

I support a hospital our "challenges" come from 3 areas. 1) the public - being in the public service arena requires that we support a guest network for their cell phones, tablets, etc. 2) the maintenance department - having a large plant and several remote clinics creates the need to monitor locations for connectivity,…

Since my orifinal posting of this we have switched from Aruba - boo hiss over to Ruckus Wireless - Yippie, yeah, "you're my hero" (just some of the comments that I have heard - yes, it's working a million times better but I don't want to exaggerate so I'll just say 999,999x better) With the Ruckus I have created universal…

I have a leader that calls them "Resume Generating Events."

Now I'm rethinking that donut I had this morning.

That's odd, I played the video at the top of the page that the link brought up and it was in there.

Dang it - stupid vacation!! I missed the survey opportunity for the extra 300 points because of vacation.

Good tip and kudos on the extra effort.

Of course not sans, not with that heavy investment in software on cassette tapes!

Everything in IT cycles and each new technology is the bees knees, or whatever the latest cool phrase is. That said it's easy to get caught up in the hype of things and move too quickly (as a consumer - if you are building products slowing down can be just the thing to sink a company) These are good comments that remind us…

We don't use it at work, but it does affect my Amazon Music so working without headphones leaves one vulnerable to "Ya gotta minute" so sometimes I have to listen to the sounds of silence.

As a start at least have it compile the information. Knowing what to purchase is a royal pain many times. I remember a few years ago where my company purchased the licenses and the servers for our customer. Working with Microsoft we found that the data owner is the one that has to purchase the licenses for their products…

Dang I wish my job took me to all these cool events.

I always take a very logical approach - start at one layer (choose a direction 1-7 or 7-1) and diagnose the path. If that doesn't provide the answer move on to the next layer. Seems like when you get to layer 8 the answer is always "Nope, nothings changed." Of course after the problem is resolved there is often the "Oh,…

Preparation and testing. I'd bet every IT person would agree that these are critical elements, but I'd also bet that most of them would also say they were too busy to do so (at least on a consistent basis)

Great page. I've bookmarked this for future reference.

Ah the old monitor vs alert questions. For me it makes sense to first monitor all the basics, but don't go overboard. Yes, in some environments monitoring every port on every switch may be a good idea - in many just the uplinks is sufficient. The key is planning. Don't just turn on everything and don't just turn off…

It's amazing how much learning and growing takes place in this industry. As I've changed jobs and locations there is so much to learn at my new position. I went from supporting a hospital to supporting traffic systems for several different groups and agencies. Far different.

Love the theme. I think there should be shirts like these available.

Congrats jbrannen!!

Always learning and developing. If you aren't doing this in the IT world you will be left behind and eventually replaced. On the bright side most IT people are in it for the challenge and growing and learning is just part of who we are.

Does it look better if you adjust the zoom on your browser? Dragging the column widths may help (probably not a lot) The ability to drag elements and size columns has spoiled me, but it would be nice if we could make adjustments within each pane.
