New here ya say! Well welcome. I believe you will find that this truly is a community - much more than any other "support" type site I've every seen. Good information, good people, good communications, good staff and just a great place overall. Be sure to participate as you'll get back far more as you interact. And connect…

OH Thanks for that I have a Samsung Smart TV and the Weeping Angels are the Creepiest of all the Dr. Who characters - You've just given me multiple things to fret over.

Insider threats. How many networks are Still using the perimeter defense method - probably a large majority of them. How many times do we need to see the statistics before we begin to take a "zero-trust" posture? So often we talk about security and even practice security with old school thinking. To me it seems like…

Congrats to all the winners. When I lived in Oklahoma City several of our Ops staff had high end RC cars and there was an actual race track where they would compete. The track had a raised platform where the "drivers" would stand to see the entire course. These would be long enough races that they had pit stops to add fuel…

The self driving car article is something I've mentioned here in the past. Some of the decisions we make in driving are moral in nature and software can't make moral decisions, only logical ones - thus programming has to plan in advance for such scenarios. My question is - could you buy your car "programming" to protect…

We don't use cloud here, but at a previous engagement we had internet broadcasts periodically. The cloud made this very easy and affordable. We only paid for the time we used - so a server cost us a few hours a month rather than full ownership. It was secure in their data center which saved us having a full DMZ and staff…

I've known way too many organizations that disconnect management from staff and IT when it comes to these discussions. Many of my friends have gotten "into trouble" because an SLA or SLO wasn't met due to a system or systems performance - generally not so much unavailable more on the performance side of things. Not because…

When an event goes smoothly the "viewers" don't get a good sense of all the work that goes into it. Thanks for this additional insight.

It used to be about monitoring that thing were up. Now it is critical that performance be monitored as the loads have increased for all systems and the perceived need of data all the time. It's not just enough to get the data, but it needs to be timely and accurate.

We are researching LEM and similar products. I'd be interested in how much time the average customer spends on management and how much time is spent on day to day viewing of events.

Followed and bookmarked, thanks.

Congrats toastyroach

Sounds like an idea that should have been implemented in the past. Good suggestion.

Not a lot of tech on my list this year but. I'm buying a SubWoofer for my son, his has been dead for some time now. Moving from Vermont to Florida I need to change my riding (motorcycle) jacket from the old heavy Leather to a strong breathable fabric one. I'd love to add a phone mount to my bike so I have it available when…

Interesting articles, as usual. Being in the health care field I found it interesting, not surprising, about the data leak. It's interesting that something so important was exposed so easily and obviously, but it's not surprising as health care has the same effects of "downsizing" budgets and the like. So often, in IT in…

Nice write up. There are the best of IT either building bad stuff or finding ways to prevent the bad stuff. Can you imagine how much we could all accomplish if everyone just worked on positive and useful things. With that additional brain power we could accomplish so much.

You are always right there to help aren't you. Yes, it's a long video, but does have some valuable content - albeit, for most of us it's things we already know, but reminders are helpful. As the speaker stated Humans are terrible at remembering things. At least that's what I thought he said. (Notice I'm saying "he said"…

The design of good applications depends so much on the user base. There was a time when programmers controlled everything (remember those days when everyone coded in all upper case). You got what you got, probably because there were limited choices. Just like so many areas there is "best" and "best practice" and what…

This is a good idea and I especially like the conversation that takes place on Thwack surrounding such ideas. It makes for a better thought out and enabled idea when it comes to fruition.

@Zibak, mprobus - Donate your points to me, I'll get the game table - put in my game room (with my pool table). You can swing by Vermont any time and play till your hearts content. Saves you space and you won't need a Playstation either as I have an Xbox One.

Nice descriptions of various strategies, thanks for the post. SIEM is becoming more of a hot topic and unfortunately so many of the systems out there are made for the deep diver rather than the generalist / network admin / systems admin, etc. It's great if you have the breadth of staff to have someone that thinks in…

I've been pitching this product to my team, looking forward to getting more information.

The company that I'm currently consulting for needs some updating in this area - its a government agency. There is a lot of old, retired equipment that needs to be pulled out of locations. One of the engineers, that has been here for 27 years, insists on leaving it in the racks and powered on as we "might need that some…

I love the missions, the points are great, but even better is the way that the missions open up ideas and thinking on the various Solarwinds products. I've been spurned on more than once to try something new with our installation because of something that I read in a mission. Thanks for the efforts.

Spend time on Thwack and get involved in the online training. The training is of good quality and they always make it entertaining. Thwack is the best product online community that I've found. I've worked with several "big boys" that have online communities and none of them are as responsive, helpful or interactive as…

Today's question includes an answer that really should be a feature request - so we'd all know when Not to answer the phone!

Nice post. Our world is constantly changing and we have to remain flexible to stay relevant.
