Not just a reset, but a re-word - it feels like the only option is to guess as the actual answers don't appear to be in the body of the document

Seems to me in the effort to become more "true to life" Hollywood generally moves farther away. I prefer when they don't detail so much. It's like the person that knows a lot of "geeky" terms, but doesn't really know what they mean and just tosses them into conversation to sound "smart." But I really, really want that…

Helpful. I like tips like this as it helps open eyes to additional ways of using familiar things. Thanks for posting.

I find myself going to this more often. The new additions will make this even more useful.

Very thorough. Thanks for posting.

OH NOOOooo I see Solarwinds "snuggies" in the future . . .

I have to admit I liked Clippy as well - well, not clippy as much as the additional characters that you could use.

Congrats RyanDahl

Performance is not a single number, but a sum. For example if you look at the latency across the WAN connection you may get a good low number, but still have slow performance. The total latency includes the time a transaction takes on the machine, the time it takes to access data from a drive, the time it takes to display…

In this industry we are constantly given more responsibilities and pressed to reduce costs and I wonder where the diminishing returns happen in EVERY business where the staff is so "busy" that things are falling apart.

Agreed. Analyzing what to keep, where to keep it and how long is usually done post-disaster. Doing so in advance saves a lot of issues in the future and gives much better use of existing resources and preparation for expansion.

Welcome Brett As has been noted memes abound as well as whining and sarcasm. However, there's a great bunch of people here and the collaboration and sharing makes it well worth daily time spent.

Awesome GIF, I'd love to shrink that and add it to my signature line (and keep it animated of course)

I was once told (actually by a vendor) that the best tools are the ones that you use. The best monitoring in the world is no good if no one looks at it. Alerts are useless if they just get deleted. We have a lot of tools here, most of which are unused or at under used. The team is tired of hearing me remind them that they…

Securing data is a top priority with most companies, but so often this is just a concept. Many companies don't bother to really determine what should be secured, where it may reside, who has access, etc. In general we have an overall "idea" of these things, but not a real hard answer. For example, most companies have…

Nice and much easier than digging through the switch to find the information.

Agreed, this used to be a joke, but now I guess it's reality.

Congrats dhaldeman and eno. Enjoy the prizes.

Very good article on communications. We (IT professionals) so often get trapped in our methods and terms and expect others to understand it the same way. A real professional will know how to communicate on multiple levels and more importantly when it is important to do so.

Nice article, we've all met some of those people - truth be known we've all probably been those people at times. My story would be about the coders that insisted that I broke SQL by not patching the box properly. Come to find out he was actively working on the box when I patched and rebooted it - even though he was…

Our business was actually very legitimate - it's just that when you get to people with that money you run into those that made it by being good business people, those that inherited it and then those on the other side of the law. Fortunately we seldom had any negatives that came out of our interactions. It was a very…

Thanks, I didn't even think of looking at Wikipedia. That's a lot of "stuff" I remember the episode of Shark Tank with the (I think) inventor of Solarwinds - apparently he/they are very ambitious.

We are Soooo creatures of habit. Over the last several questions we've been rewarded with a "That's correct" or some other verification when we click the submit button. Today, I very carefully read the questions, answers and hint - clicked the necessary box(s) and clicked Submit - NO "That's correct" Really threw me,…

Thank you, that gets me just around the corner from 125,000 !!!

"First, make sure security is built in from the start as opposed to making security an afterthought or an add-on." It's hard to break old thinking - for so long devices, applications, appliances, software, operating systems, etc. have been designed with the idea that security was taken care of by someone or something else…

Between SAM and DPA we have the tools to get to the root problems quickly - several were highlighted as soon as we turned DPA on. However, getting the DBA team to address these issues has been a chore. Things are running "OK" currently, so they have other things to do. Hopefully this year will lead them to the path of…

Too funny! And I had to comment because I'm reading this at home.
