Thank you.

I had previously created a discussion about this - Didn't think about the feature request. Anyway, here's what I had: I love getting Thwack points and the variety of ways to earn. I'd really like a master list of all the missions with details on how to earn each of them. While I like the sorting and searching functionality…

I remember the days when Intrusion Detection was becoming Intrusion Prevention. There was sill a lot of people that wanted Detection so that a human would have to analyze the anomaly to determine if it was just something new or an actual intrusion. The fear was that legitimate traffic could be blocked by automation. The…

For desktops, laptops and servers we have a recycler that picks up the devices. Unfortunately, we have a room full of Cisco equipment that we just can't get them to let go of - finance and depreciation, etc. I've worked other places that donated to non-profits, but not here.

Each individual needs to determine if they are going to pursue a specific niche or discipline and if they plan to stay with their current employer or move on. But even then the decision must be tempered by the fact that people aren't staying in their same position/employer/locale as much as years ago.

The organization for which I'm currently consulting they have a bunch of tools. This is a very "technical" team and they each have their favorites. I'm pushing for SolarWinds to be the single point of truth, but get a lot of pushback from the team.

I can read that question 2 ways - how important is it OR how important is it taken as? Collaboration is extremely important however, many organizations still have little to no collaboration. I've worked with so many (personally and as a consultant) that have people in "primary" roles that allow for "silos" and the…

What that's not real life? I worked for EDS when we did this: eds airplane commercial - Bing video

Very good article, but my favorite part is: There are no “IT Projects”. There are only Business Projects that IT supports. If we can each remember this the transformation would be amazing. So often we find ourselves engrossed in our mindset and forget that there are so many others.

Another helpful article on PerfStack - this is going to become a very useful tool.

What do you do with your old equipment - I've been trying for 3 years to get the hospital to get rid of our last upgrade and it's all still here.
-
This was a fun mission. You always do such a good job.
-
Thank you, I was one that thought it was Les as well. I appreciate that you guys take care of these things quickly.

Having all the tools working together and sharing is very important. I worked at with an account that loved having detailed information for different products. The wireless had a dashboard and system, the firewall had a dashboard and system, the IPS had a dashboard and system, etc. At any time one could have 6 "dashboards"…

Good work, I really appreciate the constant drive to improve.

Good article.

My go to has always been NPM and I expect that to be ongoing.
-
Nice article. Seems you left the best for last. Backups are soooo very important.

Thanks for the reminders. Cloud, like all other business decisions, is something that needs to be evaluated - completely - before a decision is made. So many react rather than decide.
-
So far I have all the questions correct - I like the fact that you still have to check the hints just to be sure. Office 365 is really the only thing we have in the cloud right not. With health care we tend to move less off site. I do enjoy hearing about all the other solarwinds products out there.

Data is certainly a commodity and one that has far more value than we imagine. If you happen to drop a hundred dollar bill (I've heard that they exist) and don't know it, well you are out $100. If you drop, or forget your credit card and don't realize it you are out far more - the dollars can quickly add up (yes, I know…

What are you monitoring for Office 365? We've moved our email there as well.

Nice discussion. I've been in this business for a long time - sometimes as the team other times as part of a team. The dynamics of people is always the most difficult part. It's amazing to me just how immature we (yes, I'll include myself - although just to seem empathetic, I'm Never like this) can be when we don't get our…

Good article. I like it when practical information is given - especially things that make you think "Am I doing this, could I do something better?"

I agree here as well. That was an early argument of "Windows" vs. "Unix" Windows was originally built to be open and easy for everyone to use while Unix was built to be closed and you open what you needed. With Windows usability was king, with Unix security was king. Many years later look at the virus/malware state. Closed…

Nope I haven't answered 19 or 20 'cause I'm highly allergic to red X's (strong reactions)

I really appreciate the comments on these 2: Encourage Participation in User Groups and Online Forums and Attend Trade Shows and Industry Events Some of my best ideas have come from these areas. Most companies see those activities as "non-productive" and even perks for their employees. I'm a bit of a creative type and…

My son knows what I do because he worked along side of me for a couple of years while I was in Oklahoma City. He continues to work in the IT field. My daughter just knows that my son and I do something with computers. My friends at work think I'm an expert on all things Firewall and security. (and of course they think that…

You repeat the word "deep" and I think that is with good reason. Monitoring has become more critical than ever in that we need to see beyond the obvious. It used to be enough to know that we could get email from one person to another, now we have to be concerned with the time it takes - and more importantly, the integrity…
