With a previous employer we had what we called JAD sessions - Joint Application Development. I know that's not a term unique to my company at the time, but I know the approach was unique. In JAD sessions we had the gamut of people there (as necessary - not at every single meeting) Management from our side and the customer…

Really - I love OKC. If you are into live theater look into the City Card - 2 for one admissions all over town for all kinds of theater, museums, etc. And it's all high quality. And of course one can't say OKC without mentioning Teds.

I would extend the word "engagement" to what happens after the person visits. I've run across so many websites with a "contact us" button of some sort that lets you put in comments questions and ALWAYS responds with a "Welll get right back to you" - and then they either don't get right back or it takes for ever. I had a…

Actually there are cases where the cloud is more economical for that sort of thing. With services that offer machines on demand you can spin up a machine (of the size you need) perform that heavy task and spin it back down so you are only paying for the time you actually use. Or if the machine has to be on all the time you…

The scariest part of self-driving cars is the moral side. What I mean by that is the opportunity to "buy" your own importance. Here's what I mean. A self-driving car is driving down the street at 45 mph when suddenly - just like in the cartoons - a giant safe falls from the high rise ahead of you (you know they were…

I've really enjoyed the involvement and discussions.

I chose my career path for a reason, but a degree of choosing is still in the cards

Creating as much redundancy and resiliency in a network as possible is very important in mission critical applications. In regard to the comments about grooming. We put in a Gig connection to a site 35 miles away and performance was no better than with the previous 100 meg connection. We went round and round for weeks…

Wow, I'm dumbfounded - looks like those guys are just part of that word.

That is a good point - which is why they exempt themselves from so much legislation such as healthcare.

As we talk about light it's important to remember that the opposite (darkness) is the absence of light.

I'm building more elements that encourage the team to look at dashboards throughout the day. This is to encourage proactive attention rather than waiting on alerts. I'd also like better templating to allow more device types to pull configurations with NCM.

We tend towards compliance because we have audits and check boxes. Thinking in terms of security adds a much needed layer.

I started here - yes that is a cassette tape recorder for storage.

Install went quick and easy, I already have 2 Arrays monitoring. This doesn't have the installation "walkthrough" that NPM 6.3 has at this point, which is a feature that should certainly be in all of the applications.

When you look for a job you should always have a plan and goals. When I took this job I violated that rule and was honest with every interview. I can do a variety of roles and my goal wasn't as much to "further my career" but to find a well functioning team. I did and collaboration is a huge matter for us. Whether you work…

You bring up some very good points. I think one of the biggest problems with any project is lack of planning. So often people get into virtualization and just take off running. Planning the project/builds/deployment/growth will greatly increase the chance of success and reduce the problems in the future. Your list is a…

Good article and rschroeder adds plenty of value here. (as usual)

This is a ever changing landscape - challenging, exciting and often just plain frightening! I've been around since the days where the watch word was "Never, ever apply a patch unless it addresses a very specific need" Back then patches would often "break" more than they fixed - we also never stayed on the leading edge of…

I feel your pain. Every environment has had a pocket of resistance. It really is a management issue. Sometimes management can get involved and "direct" the DBAs motivated and other times it takes something really breaking before it gets attention. Make sure you keep bubbling this up to the top for attention, and document…

@"kpina" Can you please review day 4 for me. The question is worded with ing, but is expecting an answer ion - that doesn't seem right.

That's a good point. Security belongs to all of us - in various ways. It's easy to point to the InfoSEC guy, but it the application isn't secure, or the network isn't secure, of if you still use sticky notes as your password vault, etc.

Many years ago I was showing my son how to make switch changes - IN Production - When he was finished I said "Now do a save start run" As soon as he hit enter I knew my mistake and we were in trouble. I connected directly to the device and was able to do a Save run start and the config ended up being what we intended. I…

While the information is the most important element if it's not presented in a pleasing manner it will often get neglected.

Agreed 100%. I've seen way too many environments that buy products/services/applications to "check off a box" on an audit, but don't put them into practical usage. All too often these tools are used to look up what happened rather than taking the time to build them to predict and alert before customer impact.
