I like the survey, but have a hard time suggesting the removal of any features.

Very good information and thoughts. It seems to me that every company and every manager loves to talk about how important their employees are and how important training is, but generally the time to train is neglected. I've worked for some great companies (including my current employer) and they all have some sort of…

There's always a lot of considerations when moving technologies. You make good points to consider. It's surprising to me how many times major decisions like this are made without all of the consideration that really should take place. I'm sure there are a lot of organizations that made a commitment to completely move to…

I was hesitant myself - seems like those questions that I just jump on "Of course, that's the obvious answer" are the ones the I get wrong.

Having been through numerous audits in my career - NO, I'm not talking IRS comes and takes me away in cuffs - I mean of the HIPPA and PCI varieties. I've come to appreciate their mantra "If it's not documented you aren't doing it." While it hurts to hear that the first 1, 2 or 100 times, eventually it begins to sink in.…

congrats @el_kabong!

Very good use case. This would probably make the syslog feature of NPM function better by having less to sort through. I'm going to add this to my list of things to look at in cleaning our environment up.

SolarWinds has really grown in the recent years. I really appreciate the large array of devices that are being supported.

Good article. There are several elements to a proper change process (whether that is software updates, patches, network changes or even developing policies and procedures) I'm a documentation and check list kind of guy, but I find it's important to build a path to success by defining the steps and parts necessary for the…

The Thwack community is one of the best parts of using Solarwinds. All of the contests, missions, activities and most of all the community interaction make this feel like an IT Home. I really enjoyed each of the monthly missions and look forward to Thwack Camp each year. I only wish the live Labs were on a different day -…

Yes, I did attend, love the Security Kung Fu series.

Interesting - I just can't help to think of that old story of the "Borrowers" when I hear microservices. I just imagine them going to the dentist, gas station, etc.

Click on your points at the top right of the screen. Click More in the box that appears - you'll be redirected to a page that shows your points, what they were for and when awarded. There's also a link on the left of that page that lets you look at the various missions, etc. Very helpful page.

Good point but also keep in mind that they harvest a vast amount of "data" which generates income as well. For example Google provides a lot of products and services, yet they identify themselves as a "Data Company." While they currently don't directly correlate data to specific individuals harvesting the "generic" data…

Now this is a bracket that I'll have to research, I don't know much about these characters. Sounds like it's going to be a good time. (as usual)

Unfortunately we are a Force10 shop on the switch side, so this doesn't help me too much, but I keep watching as SolarWinds is always innovation and adding new vendors to their list.

NICE announcement - I just registered for Thwack Camp. I'd love to be a part of keeping Austin weird!!!!

Good article and it goes along with the discussion here about companies paying for training. For me I have learned to balance work and outside life a lot more so I don't do as much outside training/studying/tinkering as I used to. (wish I'd learned that much sooner, my kids missed a LOT of my time because of my efforts to…

Nice article - often Security groups aren't very "sharing" friendly. Although slightly unrelated a a great organization if your area has a chapter is Infragard - it's security focused and sponsored by the FBI so all the members are vetted.

This is a NetPath out to a vendor RDP server. The device in the middle is our firewall, the device after the firewall on the bottom right is the vendors load balancer. I'd like to understand why we see the Device connecting via the bottom path, but a second path shows up and says "it ain't there." The path is from my…

Nice analogy, I like the addition of the "Next"

I love the fun we have around here. Thanks to everyone that posted, these pictures are great.

Good article. I like the old phrase you are only as good as your tools, but when it comes to troubleshooting the tool make it easier to find what you are looking for, but the underlying (and I like your word Art) skills are more intuitive than tools.

I don't know if it's our set up or just how it's done, but all of our clients, web and outlook point to the cloud.

Congrats monitoringlife enjoy the prize.

Agreed! Know your priorities.

As one of my leaders is wont to say "There's a POSH script for that."

That's a good point that gets missed by all of the "hype." All of the cloud vendors make important points about their redundancy, diversity, (insert many, many more buzz words here) and "in theory" you should never need to restore anything from a quality cloud vendor, but that's only in theory - as we all know the only…

Another example of how looking at a problem is seen very differently between different individuals. It does seem labor intensive to me, but then if the end result gives you what you want and you've gotten down a "system" who am I to question.
