Congrats nope! Great name by the way.

Dang it. Today's helpful hint was (for me) was more of a confusing hint - thus I missed the question. Rrrrrr

The new install saved me a TON of time. We use several modules and generally, I have installed one, rebooted the servers, installed the next, etc. And, yes, I know that takes extra time, but with this installer, I was able to do the updates in a couple of hours total. This includes running the installer on the main server,…

Data is neither ethical or not, but how it is used can be. Machine learning can make things more efficient, but can also be used unethically if allowed to "learn" and decide entirely on it's own. For example: credit score is often used as an indicator of credit worthiness. Without understanding the person behind that…

But isn't giving out your password kind of like a "spare key," If you forget you can phone a friend? It's surprising how many people will violate the simplest things like that. I had a boss, yes a full fledged manager, with a notebook in her top desk drawer with all of her passwords.

Congrats vblincoe

Testing plans and learning from mistakes - SOOO appropriate today. This morning we upgraded some firewall clusters with one of our customers. The first one went well - Woo Hoo!, the second one went just as well - Woo Hoo!, the third one went well - Woo OOPS - George appears (He's their workstation team lead) "Um, a bunch…

I like the phrase (although it's not 100%) "You're only as good as your tools." I've learned over the years that the right tools make the job easier, better and more accurate. The other phrase that is important (again not 100%) the best tool is the one that you will use. For example one of the leaders (a guy that I really…

Having worked with wireless for many years I have found that the root of this reporting in the SNMP values shown by the devices. For example if you are polling the controller and it is providing the information on the APs you may not have the type of AP sent via standard SNMP OID so something custom may need to be…

Sounds interesting.

This is a very nice and powerful new tool. I'm looking forward to using it and eventually having the ability to build pages that will continually monitor critical paths.
-
This is awesome. The company where I'm currently consulting is looking to replace their firewalls and I'm nudging them toward Palo Alto. This tool may also let me nudge them to SolarWinds. However - Panorama is the real way to manage PA if you are using more than one firewall.
-
I think one of the things that keeps SolarWinds out of the Top Right is the perceived lack of vendor support. The Universal Device Poller allows us to add devices that don't have native "Full" support, but this doesn't fix the perceptions.
-
But what about super-floppys and bernoulli devices?

Nice article. Your articles are always thorough.

Congrats @dgsmith80!

The interconnects between switches and our VM infrastructure is all fiber with copper out to the final end points. Our wired infrastructure is 40 Gig between the top of rack switches and the core. To the closets we have multiple 1 gig links which are in the process of being moved to 10 Gig, so we will have a minimum of 20…

How many Thwack points to ride along with you on the next trip?

Keeping it simple is a great starting point. We often get so tangled up in the complexities of the appliances, network, tools, etc.

Thanks for this series.

It's funny how a term gets popular and all of the sudden everyone is using and mis-using the term. When home wi-fi (a misnomer in itself) was getting popular and everyone called anything that plugged in a "router." I had a boss come to me once asking for a router to use during a meeting - she wanted a switch to allow…

Nice example use of the performance monitor.

This is one of the problems that plague IT data centers. Even when initially cabled correctly, neatly, etc. it becomes a mess over time. It's one of those things that fall under "get er dun." so very often.
-
Perfstack is a great addition to monitoring and putting these into a dashboard is great for monitoring those critical elements that tend to go awry. As a consultant several of my customers are using SolarWinds and I try to get my hands in there whenever possible.

Good points, So often people think disaster recovery and business continuity are the same things - until something happens.
-
Really good points about the small changes. It's so easy to get into a rut (some prefer to call it a routine) and just let things continue on as is. As professionals, we should be looking to improve - at least incrementally, on a daily basis.
-
This meshes with at least one session of this years camp and its all about re-thinking how and why we do things.

We had a great manager that was both very technical and great with people. He moved to a different position and his position rolled to another person that wasn't as good in either area and she kept her hands off. Then we had a guy on the team take the position (the just get it done guy), but he found that it was a lot more…

Nice article. Revamping how we are logging is on the list for this year.
