I did have a lovely precis of my career in IT but the late 2025 THWACK upgrade nuked it. My TLDR: been in IT for 40yrs from a fledgling delivery & installation person to field repairs to in-house guru to network engineer to monitoring maverick!

  • @"ramaiya2"personally I would not advise using that option. Why? Simply because it stops ALL alerts affected by that alert action rather than the more desirable "only stop alerts on specific nodes" - so my and @"silverbacksays" advice of going to manage nodes, etc is the much more appropriate method.
  • Hmmm, thanks Marc. I'm going to have to give this one some more thought - unfortunately I don't see rules / queries based on subnets working for us due to clients on different APE's having similar or same subnets.
  • Yes - I can see the results in the report, I'm just needing to identify what descriptor is in use to pull that out. But as fas as I can tell, I can't actually edit the word SERIAL to change (or see) what it is using. If that makes sense?
  • @"ralphpost"it looks like we mirror what you do except for the report. I'll need to double check every alert has the netperfmon event log aspect though. I'm pretty sure they do, but it doesn't hurt to double check - which make sunderstanding why I see 'multiple downs' for a device but not the intervening up that clearly…
  • Thanks for that @"Seashore" and as soon as I typed that up I went off and tried it and got expected results I haven't tried your variant, but a primary reason for not using NPM is that, AIUI, it will only report back on interfaces that are being monitored. Whereas, again AIUI, NCM grabs everything and it's just a matter of…
  • Thanks John, >> would start with Message Center. I have taken a ticket from our 3rd party ticket service, BMC Remedy, We are also using Remedy, and it ay be of interest to understand how you integrate with it, as I remain unconvinced that our method is the best. Unfortunately the BMC side is done by a spearate team that…
  • Hi @"tony.johnson" I have a solution but not sure if the issue you specifically mentioned is still potentially an issue. I say that, as I now only have the one alert which is an amendment to the default / canned one. Had a very confused support engineer poking and prodding our setup for over an hour before we decided to…
  • Hi Marc, >> Just as a curiosity, are they both running the same versions of the orion platform? No; on the one it doesn't show is running NPM 12.2 and our main platform is 2019.4 - there are plans in the pipeline to upgrade both to the most recent release. That said, the 2019.4 used to be on NPM 12.2 and I'm sure it showed…
  • Following up: Ahh, now I see. The trick was not to pick any of the defualt action options and just ignore those. Then I had to tick the box "Send a Log Rule Fired event to Orion Alerting' which opened up yet another tick box. Ticking that second box then creates the rule with whatever name you give it but you also need to…
  • That was about the only thought I had but no, in this groups case there is an address there.
  • Interesting to see your approach @"rmullal" but ours are up 24x7, but I can see cases where even we might use this approach just not with APs.
  • >> Combining those would give a pretty reliable setup. Whilst reliability is always good to consider, in this case I am purely looking at the mechanics of how best to approach the above scenario> This is in mind with the constraints we have, and wanting to reduce the noise whilst minimising troubleshooting issues. Sadly,…
  • Ahhh @"jblankjblank" then for once it isn't something I'm missing, have missed or my lack of knowledge - phew >> For now, the best option would be to create a custom view of entities and widgets which could include other metrics and a map. You can alert and report on maps similar to groups including membership availability…
  • Apologies, I may not be using the terminology correctly but let me try .... * Currently, if I select a group called ABC and I have in Network Atlas maps created one called ABC, then that displays in the group summary. * On this same group summary, I have created an additional tab within the left hand flyout menu called…
  • >> Option 4, I monitor about 60 Aruba Virtual controller AP's via SNMP each having Thin AP's ranging from 8-30 nodes. My personal, preferred approach is this but my scenario is based on Aruba kit with which we have a lot of niggly issues. I believe a lot of our problems stem from the person that introduced and configured…
  • >> I use option #2 in conjunction with network scans. I manually import That's an interesting approach. We don't use auto-scans so how do you manage this?
  • >> was disconnected for a long time, I would not receive a reconnect email. That's good to know.
  • Thanks Marc - I'll give that a go next week as I've been "distracted" by a coilleague needing something a little more urgent.
  • As ever, my thanks Marc. >> but you will want to get your SQL comfort levels way up before you start deleting Understood - my request was more about trying to understand the baby steps so as to understand what is possible down the line. I will definitely try and find some time to look at both those links you supplied.…
  • Hey Will, Thanks for that. I'd completely forgotten I had asked this question but since then I have progressed a little with my PowerShell understanding. Sadly I haven't had any real time to dedicate to it so it is very much fledgling knowledge. That said, my learning, along with your explanations make this much clearer…
  • @"tony.johnson" We are on 2019.4 The answer to the other part is not straightforward. Yes there is an edited copy of the canned alert but it is desifgned to specifically pick out these 2 VPN's. However, even before I created the copy NPM was not showing any alerts for the VPNs on this specific node.
  • Thank you @"shuth" - appreciate the quick response. Now off to debate access rights with team members
  • As a follow up to this query ... as I'm trying to think around teh box and possibly find other soutions to present options to the team... Is there such a thing as a multi line custom property? Or failing that, a notes box that obeys 'carriage returns' and other standard document markups / commands?
  • Thank you @"mesverrum" - as ever good info and I appreciate your time to respond. I had a gut feeling that the issue wasn't the DB side of things, but needed someone else to confirm that. With the case of the VPN details it has the potential to never get used unless we loose all backups, etc at the same time. So, migrating…
  • Thank you both - appreciate the quick replies @"jhandberg" and @"jm_sysadmin"
  • Hey Alex, and thanks for the reply. I can see a use for that so will probably use it as well. However, my use of words may not be 100% right, especially in Solarwinds and/or DB terms and what is what. I was really after seeing all the actions such as node down, node up, etc and having those sent in a report on a daily…
  • I guess this is my issue in that I am unsure of how to do that. Can you point me at a resource that details this process?
  • Thanks Marc .. I shall give it a whirl then.
  • I hear what you say - but I'mn only trying to enter the OID as discovered during an SNMP walk and not some random Googled variant...
  • Thank you. As it happens, between asking that question and seeing your reply I have now been on an 'intro to SOLW' course and alerting / reporting logic was one key query I was looking to get answered, I didn't share the query due to confidentiality reasons but you managed to work out what I was after so, thank you. Then…
