  • Wow, Chrystal, thanks for putting together this post. This will be a handy reference for me. I started Solarwinds admin at the end of last year, when we decided to bring monitoring in house. We currently have a primary poller and two additional pollers, monitoring about 3k nodes and about 20k elements/interfaces, and I…
  • Something along the lines of this:
  • Came across this today and tried it out in our environment. Initial impression is that it works well. I am going to try to work with it a bit and see how it works out. Thanks!
  • Thanks for posting this. I came across this in a search for postings on interfaces in an Unknown state, and this query worked perfectly to help me identify devices with those types of interfaces, saving me a ton of time. Much appreciated.
  • Are you saying that you have some performance counters being monitored in APM that are the same as some SNMP stat polling? With APM, you can use WMI to fetch quite a few Windows specific counters and monitors that but there aren't too many that you can't just do with SNMP. Also, WMI fetches tend to use about 5 times more…
  • Fantastic job ! This is now bookmarked for me and will be a reference I provide to anyone needing to understand the fundamentals of monitoring.
  • There could be a couple reasons for this. What type of devices are they? Has anything changed with regard to their config recently? Can you post a screenshot? I have seen issues with certain nodes, with a couple different scenarios. Some nodes, when a replacement is made using the same IP address, will show unknown…
  • Haven't seen this myself. Are you running into this on the individual node summary, or the Manage Nodes screen? If one, have you tried through the other?
  • Checking to see if anyone has any input yet on this. Please let me know if you have any information that might be helpful.
  • This first thing I would do is make sure the NCM config on the devices is correct, especially the User/Device credentials. I had one or two devices not backing up and I found that I had forgotten to set the credentials (defaulted to Device and we used User). Another thing is the connection. I have run into an issue before…
  • One of the very first times I entered multiple nodes years ago I found out the hard way that entering through multiple tabs is a bad idea. We had a discussion somewhere on the forums about this a while back. In my situation, a node's information on Tab 2 overwrote information for the node on Tab 1. This has to do with the…
  • My gosh, that is an impressive prize package. Looking forward to this very much!
  • I just checked ours, and it looks like we are monitoring the basics. Response Time, Packet Loss, all interfaces. hardware health, all available IP addresses. Our monitoring environment is still in need of fine-tuning though, and this would most likely be a candidate for additional monitoring.
  • Okay, I have gotten a bit of clarification on this, and the request is a bit more complicated than originally thought. The scenario is this: 1. We have a directory that should have a file written to it out of a custom application, at periodic intervals throughout the day. 2. If the file is not written to the directory, it…
  • I don't think I have a set answer for you, but can provide information on what I did with similar situations. I tend to be an overly cautious type and have been a bit nervous with situations where I increased retention times for various aspects of the environment. Prior to increasing, I took note of database sizes,…
  • Okay, it is now working again. With the wonderful assistance of Lorenzo Brizeno, I uninstalled the NCM-NPM Integration Component and NCM itself. NCM was then reinstalled and the configuration wizard run. There were a couple issues during the config wizard with regard to the website and a file in use, but Lorenzo stopped…
  • I should also mention versions. We have NCM on 7.0.2 and NPM on 10.3. Both were upgraded a couple months back and have been running well. This was our first implementation of NCM, and I had been steadily adding nodes to it over the past few weeks. It really looks to me like the PCAnywhere uninstall that I mentioned removed…
  • I am not sure, but this could be one of a couple issues. I am thinking it might be with the suppression rules. If I remember correctly, suppression rules are distinct from trigger rules, so if you have something defined there, it may be keeping the alert from firing. If you want to exclude the alert from a specfic node,…
  • At the place I left recently, I never saw this (NPM 10.2). However, at my new place, I am seeing the issue. I tried in IE and Chrome. In IE is basically spins and I eventually get the error. In Chrome it does the same and then just reloads the Orion Summary Home screen rather than generating an error. We are on NPM 10.3.1.
  • Great list Leon, glad I stumbled upon it.
  • Did you create the report as an Advanced SQL report or did you start with one of the canned reports in Report Writer? have not used SQL statements in the Filter section and can't quite place what you might be doing. If I had any reports that I need to do some customization to, I would normally Show SQL to get the SQL…
  • As mentioned, you can do it in the alert itself. On the primary Orion server, under Start>Programs, located Advanced Alert Manager. Open up the window with all alerts and then locate the alert you want to modify, check it and choose Edit. In the alert window that opens, locate the Trigger Action tab. Near the bottom of the…
  • Thank you both for the replies. The query will be helpful on multiple levels, and the PollerChecker tool points me directly to those nodes with problems. I am surprised that PollerChecker tool is not listed in the program group (or is it a subprogram of something else?). I am still trying to get a handle on all of the…
  • As Jiri mentioned, the Home tab is present for all module. NCM is found primarily under the Configs tab, but it does not sound like this is what you need. NCM is used primarily to manage configurations for network devices (backing up startup and running configs on switches, for example). Based on your question, it sounds…
  • I have not run into this problem before, but is it possible that you have an Application Monitor on the same server? I am not sure whether unmanaging a node also unmanages an APM, but I have unmanaged an application separately, which makes me wonder if there is a disconnect there. Do the alerts come in quite a while after…
  • I upgraded from NPM 10.1.3 to 10.3 last Friday. I did not upgrade SAM at that time, but I did upgrade NCM to 7.0.2. This was my first upgrade as a Solarwinds admin, and I was very nervous about it, especially since it was high visibility in our environment. The NPM upgrade went surprisingly smooth. The only issues I had…
  • Quite a few people have experience with this, but I will add mine as well. I have now worked with Solarwinds products at two companies, though not long with my new company. I will give a breakdown based on each. My Previous Employer We had a primary Orion server running in a VM. This server was running Orion Core, NPM,…

  • Still looking for thoughts or opinions on this question.
  • Checking in on some of my old questions, and I came across this one. I am no longer in my old environment, but I am looking over my new environment, and I am still looking for some input on this question. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions?
