I've just resigned myself to the fact that we are data hoarders. We rarely have a proper archiving strategy. We want all the data, at all times.

I think Cortana wasn't there because Microsoft isn't building Cortana for consumer products, it's more for data collection and developers. Cortana isn't about a user interface experience in the way Alexa is right now.

Yeah, seems it would be cheaper to buy all those email addresses from the dark web than to buy the whole company.

Yes, lots of lessons for everyone involved. Always bring a spare battery!
-
That's brilliant!
-
Ah, yes, that would not be proper.

DPA has a decent amount of documentation embedded inside of it to help you understand what you are looking at and steps you can take to help improve query performance. For a generalist I'd suggest focusing on the advisories on the main screen. That's a list of the top 5 queries each day. Focus on the critical and warning…

Sounds like a good deal to me. I get 3 sets of skills in exchange for just 1. Thanks!

I'm a bit surprised as well. Then again, this could be another example where technology moves faster than the rules (or laws) can be applied. I really don't have an explanation for this.
-
OK, let me know if you need help or if you have any question in general.

Uber continues to hit new lows for me. They know they are operating illegally in a city, but choose to do so in order to gain a foothold that they can use a leverage in order to become legitimate. You know who else operates in that manner? Organized crime.

I like that idea. Taking it a bit slower, by focusing on things such as privacy and security.

Just last night I heard Charles Barkley state that 80% of all athletes end up broke when their careers are done. At first I thought that was a bit much but then I realized that not every athlete makes millions of dollars a year. Sir Charles did mention that the friends and family were the biggest reasons why athletes go…

Thank you!

Yes, this is a shared responsibility. We are all to blame.

If you haven't seen all the efforts Microsoft has done for the past ten years with regards to security, you can browse them here: Microsoft Trust Center | Threat management The short of it is this: Microsoft Azure is far more secure than you might think. This is their core business now. They can't afford to have any…

I don't want to move, I want less snow. Al Gore promised me less snow. I'm now wondering what will happen first: less snow or flying cars.

The number one job for any DBA is recovery. If you can't recover a database, you can't keep your job. Every other task is secondary to that.
-
Yes, operational (or production) DBAs. Not a DBA that writes code, or does database design. For other DBA-types as you have mentioned, I would say they have different priorities. I'm not certain I would ever put performance first. Looking forward to the next post!

Right, you need to track the performance degradation that kicks in after each snapshot is taken. You could probably roll that into a nice PowerBI visualization to help hammer the point home. I'd also suggest rolling your own solution here, and track the number of snapshots for your database servers manually. That way you…

Stop. Saying. That. SQL Server will use what it needs, when it needs it. It will also use what you have told it to use. So, if you have mis-configured SQL Server to allow it to use as much of the server memory as possible, then it will. The default will go up to 95% of physical RAM, but that is *just* for buffer pool…

They solved that issue in the second Batman reboot...they built a huge power storage facility. Where is Christopher Walken right now?
-
Fair point, but I wouldn't worry about where the planes are manufactured just yet. If the testing is legit, I would expect other companies to pay for the right to produce the planes.
-
Yeah, eventually it will cut down on having to remember how to drive to work each day.
-
Agreed, I believe that we will see some very positive things coming.
-
A single backup causing this issue? Or do you mean all servers doing database dumps at once? We had issues when all the servers would kick off at the same time, and we would stagger our backups to help offset that issue. But if a single backup is causing an issue then you need to talk with someone about how best to store…

Thank you!

To be clear, I said that storage is King, maybe.

I'm siting here typing this comment while my daughter watches YouTube videos from John Oliver...so...yeah.
