Agreed that hands-on is the best way to be trained on something. Telling ain't training.

Yeah, looks like Cloudflare is seeing lots of issues with their choice of 1.1.1.1, as that was an IP used as a default by many devices.

I cannot believe you wasted even ONE brain cycle trying to blame the database for this outage. Have I taught you nothing? Wait, wait...don't tell me.

"It would be cheaper to raise the streets of Boston than to build a tunnel." - Barney Frank, 1980-ish The scope of the Big Dig was incredible. The scope for self-driving cars would not be on that scale. The only issue in Boston is the politicians.

Great tips. Many novice admins try to collect way too many details in an effort to avoid missing something vital. Experienced admins know what metrics are truly important and gather only what is needed.

Thanks!

Seriously though, I'd pay to watch drones battle each other. Like robot wars, but different.

I always thought of a use tax as something simpler, a flat tax tied to car registration. Pay a few hundred dollars a year to help pay for road maintenance. I never thought of it as tracking cars, or even submitting mileage. But in MA, we could track mileage because we have car inspections every year. No need to use GPS.

Our family had just finished riding on the London Eye and walked to Trafalgar Square for sightseeing. It was a wonderful night to be there as the square wasn't blocked off for an event. We were able to climb up and around on everything. At some point I walked over to the King Charles I statue because I didn't know what it…

I will see about posting the slides as well as a summary.

I knew you were going to ask that!

Email, by definition, includes at least 2 parties. And likely a copy on every server in between those parties. AFAIK, those copies can be used to frame a narrative that may not be desirable. That's why I've been hearing law firms suggest that it's best to keep everything, just in case you need it. Strange thought: Maybe…

Got that in Denver, 2007. Was at a karaoke bar and the Jaeger girls made an appearance, handing out swag. The place had Jaeger on tap, too. I wrote about it once here: Communication Breakdown

It's a still shot from the 50th Lab episode, so the stars don't mean anything they are just in the background. I believe Kong is a Seahawk, because of his affinity for the Seattle Seahawks.

Sounds like they were looking for someone with senior level experience but only wanted to offer junior level salary. I've no idea why companies bother with such tactics. It ends up costing more money in time spent interviewing than if you were to just hire a senior person to begin with.

As much as I enjoy the chance to hurt myself with a power tool, I know that if I really want to hurt myself I need to upgrade to one of these for destroying hard drives: 6080S hard drive - YouTube

Sorry about the link, should be fixed now.

Exactly, that's why I find it crazy to think that he would try to get away with this. I want to believe it was a planned sale.

Thanks for the comment, glad to know you enjoyed the post.

As a currency, Bitcoin is terrible. As an investment, it's a bubble. I think this sums it up nicely: Shane on Twitter: "Haha, I feel sorry for all you losers who missed out on the Bitcoin train. You should've bought in ye…

I just remembered a grocery store memory. One day I needed to find some fresh basil. So, i went to where ALL OF THE FRESH HERBS were. Rosemary, thyme, etc...they were all there, except the basil. No basil anywhere. I finally asked someone (and, as a man, you KNOW how painful that was for me) and they looked at me like I…

Well, if they aren't looking for it, or if they don't know how to recognize it when they see it, or if it was an inside job...

Years ago I received a call from a telemarketer asking for someone that *sounded* like my name. I replied with "No, but what are you wearing?" After a bit of back and forth the woman asked me if I thought this "was a s-e-x call", to which I said "I don't care what you want to talk about, it's your $6.99 a minute." She hung…

Probably because you don't want to see "bad code" at the top of the list each morning.

DPA is agentless and uses queries against system views in order to collect as much data as it can and then we slice and dice it from there. We also do some WMI calls for perfmon counters that are not in the system views, but the overhead for DPA is smaller because we use sampling as opposed to tracing.

Great point, I doubt that ad code is vetted. That reminds me about free Wordpress plugins, too. They are an attack vector as well, even ones that are considered from reputable sources.

Yes, by 'serverless' they just mean you don't need to spin up your own server. The code and workload is managed by the cloud provider (same for Azure Functions). But there is a server, somewhere, as the backend. It's the mainframe all over again!

Agreed. It seems as if corporate executives aren't learning how to handle breaches properly. Then again, maybe there is additional information we don't have as to why they decided to butcher their response so poorly.
