I agree completely with the idea that data is power. Taking the time to do the research to get the facts you need is important when making a case for any of your needs. There is also a dark side here, and that is when people in power control the data you are able to receive.

Oh, I think Skynet is already here, it just hasn't woke yet.

Blame the network, that's what we did. And the network guys would blame management for not buying the right equipment to begin with. And then management would tell the business that it would cost too much to fix the problem. And by that time you would have fixed the query performance and everyone was a winner. (Yes, this…

Thanks for the kind words about Ignite. I loved that tool so much I went to work for the company!

DBAs often aren't querying anything. We are making certain the backups ran successfully, or that orphaned logins are getting cleaned up, or checking on why there is a spike in CPU on a server, or looking into a job failure, etc. There is a lot to the role that has nothing to do with writing queries (which is often a job…

"with recent problems with Oracle" should just be "with problems with Oracle". Their licensing and strong-arm sales tactics have been known for years.

Agreed, but that's where test driven development shines. I wouldn't expect you to deploy without testing, and testing needs to be done as easily (and quickly) as possible. Without testing, it's a crapshoot. That being said...I know a company that makes some great tools to help identify root causes. #justsayin

Fixed!

I'm not as surprised about what the Geek Squad did as much as I'm surprised people didn't think they would be caught.

Yes, I found it important for a handful of reasons. First, Netflix is a data-driven company. The content they create is popular because they have been gathering data on what people want to see. The concept of Stranger Things isn't just luck, it was designed to hit all the right metrics to make it popular. Also worth noting…

It's one of many metrics with which to compare companies, but I know what you mean.

Yep, that's a great way to learn. When I was a junior DBA I was lucky to have a mentor that did some internal training. He walked me through backups, restores, logins, RAID, etc. It really helped lay a solid foundation for me to build upon.

That's what I'm talking about!

You are most welcome, thanks for taking the time to read and comment, much appreciated!

We mocked them because those posts did nothing regarding the use and terms that they agreed to when creating their Facebook accounts. They might as well have posted "I do not allow this bacon to clog my arteries" as if that would help.

How can talking about data be anyone's least favorite topic?
-
Yes! MOAR DPA MISSIONS! Let me know if you ever have questions regarding data, databases, or DPA!

I'd say that NPS has some use as a metric, but it shouldn't be a key metric.

Funny, but I find myself willing to patch early and often, also given Microsoft's past performance. The issues I have seen are not ones brought about by Microsoft, it's usually brought about by applications and development. These days Microsoft is doing test driven development as good as anyone I know. Azure is a huge…
-
Yep. This incident also shows why patching right away isn't the right answer, either. You really need to assess your risk first, and then decide how quickly you want/need to patch.

We're not old, we're "experienced".

Thanks for the comment and sharing your thoughts! Yes, it seems that the laws are always behind the tech, and this is no exception.

The decision to upgrade is really based upon your business needs. For some, waiting a year or two is necessary. For others, they are early adopters that have been running SQL 2016 in production for the past six months. As for "working out the kins", I would say that much of the code base in the boxed version has already…

And don't forget to consider the workload on the VM itself. For example, if the VM is a database server, and the workload happens to be CPU intensive, and if the queries are trying to run in parallel, etc.
-
I was fascinated to see the parallels. It was weird reading that post and getting the sense how they feel academia is different than any other industry. But reading that post helped me understand this is a human problem. It's a social thing, not an industry thing.

That looks like a wonderful meal!

Whoa, there's a business idea if I have ever heard one. It's pure profit!

Mergers and acquisitions have been going on for centuries. There are groups of people that know how to take money and leverage it to make more money. There are times when customer support suffers, as you have seen, because merging companies isn't as easy as putting together the Brady Bunch. Even then, you think things are…
