As a data professional, the biggest issue here is the overloading of terms such as "backup". A database backup is not the same as a backup of a server. I once had a CTO who insisted I called my database backups database dumps just to avoid the confusion we could have during meetings. When you toss in the use of VSS to…

Agreed, I love how they were transparent for everyone. And I don't want to pile on them for this, I know that mistakes happen. I wanted to use it as a learning exercise for everyone.

Welcome!

Apologies for the bad links, those responsible have been sacked. Everything should be working now.

Right, gotcha. Not sure why a Linux admin would cost more though. Maybe they charge more because they know you are saving money on not buying an O/S? Then again, if you are using Oracle that means you do have money, but you spent it all on Oracle forcing you to use Linux and there's nothing left for salaries anyway.

I'm stealing this one.

Yes, a whole book on how to survive as a DBA...

Yeah, this article made me realize that whatever failover issues I have faced in the past pale in comparison to Netflix, and how they were able to architect a solution.

Want.

Thanks, but Suzanne was the author, not me.

Well, blaming the outage on outsourcing wasn't presented as a guess, it was presented as "they've outsourced, and now this happened, and Delta won't return my calls, so I'm going to present this as fact". But I suppose that's what passes for journalism these days. I wonder why IT doesn't share such information openly? It's…

I hope we have something soon. I believe that consumers need to be protected from business that care more about money than people. I'm fine with putting a burden on businesses to put people ahead of profits.

I never took a database class except for some training classes once I had a job. So, i've no idea what was taught in school but I can't imagine taking a class for 15 weeks on databases! As far as SQL goes, I found it came easier once I started thinking in sets. Eventually I realized that classroom theory was not what we…

Yeah, that's part of the cost, benefit, risk formula. If it is cheaper to pay later, then don't bother fixing things now. If only we incentivised companies and people to do the right thing instead of focusing on money.

Thank you!

Yes, that would be possible. You'd want a combination of memory metrics, along with disk waits, to get an idea if your SQL needed more memory. But as I suggested above, just adding more memory may not be a solution. You need to do some analysis on the workload to uncover specific optimization opportunities.

Wonderful insight as always, thanks for your contributions each week!

I think you and I must have worked together at some point...

The bottom was green, if that helps. But it had my QR code and I didn't want to post that publicly. I su[ppose I could have scrubbed it but I was lazy and tried and posting pics from my hotel room and...nevermind.

That's a fair point, thanks!

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Thanks!

Not sure if you looked at the article, but the streaming for NFL wasn't free. It cost money, but was a cheaper alternative. Also, the comment I left wasn't about not paying, it was about being able to watch the content you have paid for, but you happen to be in a different country at the time.

My philosophy was simple: * Alert for when action is necessary, otherwise * Don't Being alerted to something that doesn't require action is just white noise. You are better off logging that information somewhere to be reviewed later.

Oh, I had forgotten about him! Is it a him? I really don't know.

Rotation of passwords does not lead to better security. Dropping this forced expiration is a step in the right direction.

Exactly, it seems like a token fine. But, at least it is *something*, right?

Does Oracle still charge you for querying system views without a license?
