The future is going to be OK, just keep your skills up to date and focus more on human tasks. Even better, learn how to automate things for others, that should be a career for a while.

That's great to hear, and even better if one of those tools is DPA! The database gets blamed often (IMO), but with so many layers between an end-user and their data it makes accurate troubleshooting difficult at times. We've gone from being mechanics to being F1 race car crew.

Green is just a color I started using back in the day when I needed one for my blog and personal brand. I've just kept it over the years and the kids have fun with it now, too.

@"smttysmth02gt" @"rschroeder" We want to build semi-enclosed deck. It started as a 10x12 sized deck, but then I discovered we could go up to 200 square feet without needing a permit, so it became 16x12 instead. It feels big when you are standing on it, and we joke it is more like a stage than a deck. We just call it "the…

The crowd was thick all week, no question. But this year the shuttle buses ran point-to-point, cutting times by 30 minutes or more. The hardest part for me during the week is finding a quiet place to take a phone call when I want to speak with my family. Timezones make conversations hard enough, the noise is an additional…

I'm certain that they are trying new things in an effort to make things better...but...if the end result is people can't get food, they may want to rethink how they deploy and test their changes. It's one thing for a book store to not have books, it's another if people can't buy food.

No luck yet, but I'm going to keep looking.

The custom dashboards is a wonderful idea. It brings a tear to my #DevOps eyes. I didn't intend to give anyone the shakes about Cloud with my article, I was just trying to raise awareness about the areas of focus sys admins need to have once you go Cloud. And...the same things are true for private cloud, too. As a DBA I am…

I agree, it's time to let XP die. We need to get people to stop thinking that it is OK to run older versions of software because they "just work".

Thanks!

Wonderful post! Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, this should be interesting.

Thanks!

Yeah, Netflix has made a handful of their internal tools open source. For a company of their scale and needs, you can't get solutions off the shelf. They are forced to build their own for a lot of things. By sharing they get benefits from others that use the tool and provide feedback. Everyone wins.

OOOhhh...I once blogged about tribbles, will need to dig that up again!

Welcome, thanks for reading!

You figured me out...I have invested heavily in companies that make sleeping pills

Yes, I will be in Barcelona!

Thanks for the comments! I'm not sure how much we will be saving, I am thinking right now it is about 15%, but inflation could kick in at some point and wipe out such gains.

Yep, seems to be how things work. However, I still don't know if this was a planned sell or not. It is also worth noting their stock is higher now than before, so he lost money!

Database size doesn't have a direct correlation to the memory needed to function properly. Your database workload will be the main factor in deciding how much memory is needed. I can have a 1TB database but if 99% of that is read-only then I would need a tiny fraction of the 1TB for SQL Server. While it might be a nice…

I always assumed people came here for bacon and bad jokes, was that wrong?

Years ago I was on assignment in Monterrey, Mexico, and was amazed at how easily I could watch all the NFL games from the local sports bar. It seems that is still the case for the NFL these days, they pump the games easily to other countries and force those of us in the US to pay.

Yeah, Bitcoin is nothing more than a scam at this point, IMO.

Very cool, I'm excited by the direction of New Microsoft these days. The developers are in charge again, and I'm enjoying the ride.

Not just BI, but the application of data. That's where the future is heading. The storage of data is going to be automated away. The real value will be for people that can analyze, and apply, data to answer questions and solve problems.

Thanks!

Yes, that article was a bit much, IMO.

That looks close enough that I *might* be able to get there this trip. What should I order if I make it there?
-
Agreed! I want to give it a try as well.
