I'm lucky to be about an hour from a beach where I live and I cannot imagine not being near water.
-
It's closer than most people get, that's for certain. We are lucky to be able to visit fairly easy. I can get from my house to Grand Central Terminal in about 3 hours. One hour in a car, and two hours on a train. I used to commute to an office there once a month or so, and got familiar with finding my way around. NYC can…

LIkely not an issue with the Pure array, but with the data getting to the array. I've seen issues when the VM kernal gets flooded, and SQL Server *thinks* it is disk related, but it's not. But unless you are running the ESX Top command you might never know the kernal was the issue. But it sounds like you've got a lot more…

Netflix has 60-90 seconds to keep our attention when we browse for something to watch. If imagery helps us make a decision, then that's a good thing for Netflix. With so much content to choose from, it is more efficient to let the machines pick a sample of images that work best. That way the humans can give approval on the…

You are most welcome, glad you found it useful. Thanks for sharing.

I'm already there.

Yes, deadlocks can be a bit tricky. Let me know if you have additional questions.
-
I'm not bitter. Not at all.
-
I'm still catching up on that bit of news, trying to get some facts before I offer my opinions.

You are correct in the idea that it doesn't matter where the data is hosted, but the difference for a Cloud DBA is mostly on how to do performance troubleshooting and data recovery. It's the same skills, just done in a different way.

Whoops! Yes, and fixed. Sorry about that!

I have a library of books on my blog: SQL Server Books There may be something there that would be useful. I need to update it a bit for SQL 2016 and for some data analytics, too. If you have a specific question about learning anything SQL, or want info on what book authors you should read, or bloggers to follow…

Awesome! I loved that book, great read.

Sounds like an odd case here. Interesting that they realized the mistake though. I'm not certain what someone would think if they reviewed my social media profiles. I suspect they would imagine I smell like bacon as I walk through the door.
-
The kids have their own profiles, yes, but that doesn't mean they ever bother to switch to them when they start viewing things.
-
Yes, I would agree that nuclear secrets are quite important.

Peter, Thanks for the comment. I heard about the fire late last night, I'm still looking for some facts. I haven't found any reference to a weekly test, please pass along a link if you have one available. The sources I found said the fire happened as a result of the initial failover, but no mention of it being a test. I'm…

Yes, that does help. I do still recall the time someone stopped by my desk to talk to me about the upgrades happening tomorrow and to make sure I had taken backups, etc., and it was for a server/system I had never heard about and had no access to, either. Good times!

I love spending time in Darmstadt, it is worth a visit if you have the time.
-
Hmmm....I'm not sure I have ever visited there. Tucson, yes. But not Phoenix. Weird.
-
I have no idea if they go away. i don't think they do, but I think they need to change. Then again, maybe they don't? It's going to be interesting to watch.

That's quite a list! But your point about getting stuff in writing is taken, and I believe Microsoft does work with customers on building out agreements to meet everything you have listed. I would say that you are not likely going to be able to monitor the public data center, and that's why they work with you on building…

You aren't an accidental DBA until one of two things happens: 1. You have to reset a password 2. You have to recover something (database, table, stored procedure) Once you do one of those two things you should go check out the salary range for Oracle DBAs in your area and talk about getting a raise.

It's crazy to think about such a need. If it were a human driving a car that resulted in a crash we wouldn't think about dissecting their brain to determine why they decided to make certain choices. But here we are, trying to build a brain to make decisions, and then likely end up in a place where we have to pull apart…

Thanks!

Microsoft also has a long history of user satisfaction, too.

Yep, it would seem that we have a lot of entities interested in exploiting a service for financial gain. In the end, the users get screwed no matter what.
-
Hmmm...OverTheWire: Wargames is working for me right now.

AppInsight should not be causing that load. Usually when I hear about such a concern I have the customer dig in a bit to see if there are any errors with the collection. Sometimes it is permissions issues (Win2008 and UAC is the culprit here) and it's a quick fix to get things running smoothly again. If you are seeing an…
