As a DBA my answer is "Yes, I really do need 16GB of RAM". I've been preaching for years that bad configuration choices are a leading cause for performance issues. Nice to see someone else singing the same tune!

That's fine, but 'cloud' is an overloaded term these days. If you have a datacenter, or a remote office, and you need to support them using an external network of some kind (even the local phone company), you are going to have the same pains. Back in the day I had to move data between offices about 800 miles apart and it…

Oh? I can include more math articles...

It's the text displayed on the Programs tab in DPA. So, drill into day, then hour, then on the programs tab you might see something like: TSQL JobStep (Job 0xB47B0AC9B6128340BD85B1A13A98C671 : Step 1), I think DPA should show the job name.

I'm not sure I fully agree with that sentiment. Both AWS and Azure provide solid service. But interruptions are bound to happen from time to time. If you go cloud, you need to consider this fact. If you go cloud and expect it to always be there, you will be disappointed at times.

FWIW, I wrote a post to help people understand if their database server is protected or not: How to Check if Your Database Server Is Protected Against Meltdown and Spectre - Thomas LaRock

SQL on a VM is easier than that bridge.

I suspect in a few years there will be a tell-all book about how Uber went so horribly wrong, so fast.

Thank you!

Exactly! And given that most DBA types are curmudgeons that no one wants to invite to meetings, hardware becomes a clear choice.

Oh, I've written about Wikipedia before, too. Maybe I'll dig that up.

It means someone on the marketing team got a bonus for hitting all the right SEO words that day.

Yeah, this was one of the ain issues I had with a dev team that was "agile" back in the day. They did unit testing against a tiny dataset, just to prove functionality. But when the rolled to production, their code bombed. Naturally, we got blamed for not knowing how to administer a database. When we tried to explain what…

I was working on my PhD in Mathematics and suddenly realized I could get a job that paid me money now, and wouldn't have to wait years to finish school before I could afford things like shoes. So I took a job as a software analyst and that was 20 years ago and now I don't care much for shoes because I prefer my slippers as…

That. Is. Awesome.

Thanks for the feedback!

I like those examples for operational excellence. But what about volume? Being able to meet the defined SLAs for 5 servers is a different skill level than doing the same for 500 servers.
-
I'm trying to think about the other benefits, such as movies and music. Will see if it is worth the cost.
-
Agreed, it is a brilliant way to get the point across.

We look like we are about to drop the hottest album of 2017!

I certainly understand the sentiment here, even as a DBA. Just by sitting in the chair doesn't mean I know everything about the platform. Being asked to shred XML and expected to do so quickly just leads to frustration. In my last shop I had to be the admin for SQL Server and Sybase. It was difficult at times until I…

Yeah, it's a bit cold here, too. I want to rake the roof but I don't think it will matter.

Wonderful! 2015 was a GREAT year, and I am looking forward to 2016!

Sorry.

Hmmmm....I must have picked the wrong date, sorry about that!

This is why we can't have nice things.

Thanks for watching!

We use chips for road races, put them on your shoelace. It would be easy for people to carry one, like a fitbit, at events. Someone should get on this idea.
