OK, now I need to make bacon toast.

Yep, locks of love, that's what they were.

Oh, yes, the airline prices. I've known about that for a while now, and on all the websites that offer such services such as rental cars, hotels, etc. And don't get me started on how airlines even calculate pricing, that's a different rant for a different day. Still, I hadn't thought about this pricing fix in other areas…

Thanks for the comment and the kind words. And yes, much of the content above can be modified and applied to other groups...including the POTUS!

A quick search on Bing or Google will reveal many incidents of data breaches where someone served jail time. If it can be shown that the CIO was willfully negligent, then yes, they can go to jail. If you don't believe that anyone can go to jail for a breach, then you should assume an ROI of 0% to be the "get real" amount.

I've seen that as well. The waste inside of IT infrastructure can be staggering.
-
Yep, agreed. I should find a way to include those tools with the ORM section. Thanks!

Yes, there are some devices that are worth being connected, no question. But not all of them. A refrigerator doesn't need to be connected to the internet in order to send you an email to tell you that it needs a new water filter. That's absurd, IMO. It just needs to tell you with a display panel. There are lots of examples…

I think we've advanced far enough with wind and solar that we don't need nuclear plants. I did read up on a nuclear plant using salt instead of water though, that seemed interesting and the radioactive decay in years was far less: Safer Nuclear Power, at Half the Price - MIT Technology Review

I didn't think about the angst being expressed. When I read stuff like that I usually dismiss it in my mind as being one-sided. I shared the article because I wanted to raise awareness of the personal data being kept by schools, and how schools are not prepared to guard that information.

Agreed, the amount of specialty stores, and specialty items seems a bit much to me, too.
-
That's a great way of thinking about features. If it's too convenient, it's likely not secure.

Thank you!

I think the outage underscores just how fragile our infrastructure is at times.

We will have an example, you need to tune in to find out!

First!

Welcome!

I love the idea of in-memory computing. It's the latest trend I see as an effort to improve query times and make it appear that the platform is as fast (or faster) than any other platform available. I do like to talk about things such as disaster recovery. Because memory is volatile I tend to think about things like "what…

Ha! Yeah, I'm afraid to dive into there.

I feel the same way. However, I've come to understand that some data, like emails, should never be deleted.

Yeah, I was surprised to find out we are further behind, too. But then again, it makes sense. We have far more people here than most other countries. So, for a smaller country to compete on a larger scale, they need to automate. We don't have that need. But when we do, we adapt, just slowly.

I think that is a fair assessment. If a snapshot can serve as a recovery point, then you could define it as a backup. But the issue I still see is the overloading of the term "backup". As you pointed out there are many different backup methods. Some systems require very special methods (hello Biztalk!) on top of everything…

Agreed, and it's been that way for centuries. Everyone hates it, and yet it seems to remain.

Maybe there's a river running right through downtown that doesn't show up on that map and...oh...nevermind...it's just awful, I know.

I find them in my Feedly, I have about 500 feeds to go through and try to pick out the ones I feel would be most interesting to everyone here.

Thank you!

Wonderful stuff. Well done, good sir, I said WELL DONE! (^HT)

That was exactly my thought as well, that ATMs are often isolated and running on older software, probably because some manager doesn't see the need to keep systems up to date.

She has gone to 3-4 events with me, the first one I took her to was in NYC in November of 2011: http://thomaslarock.com/someday/ I feel it is very important for children to see their parents at work. Since I work from my home it feels as if they don't ever really understand what is "work" for me. To be honest, it is also…
