Thanks for all the great inputs. I have it all working now although I did not setup the ICMP rule yet. mharvey, I will test your advise on a test box about setting up an ICMP rule for a Windows Node.

I am still new to Orion. I am configuring it right now to monitor our VMWare environment. I got the ESX hosts added to Orion by creating a local user on each host with read-only permissions. I am confused as to what type of user is needed for the vCenter server. Can somebody please help me? So, under the "VMWare Polling…

Ah! I got it. Thanks for the suggestion.

jschlotzhauer, thanks for the detailed steps. Changing the "Any subnet" setting for the UDP port 161 rule fixed the issue. What Orion functionality will I lose if I don't add the custom rule for ICMP? I thought SNMP will provide me all the info/updates needed.

Thanks for getting back quickly. Can you offer some help on my SNMP issue? Highly appreciate it. This is happening to a few Windows Servers only. Others seem fine. I compared the two sets and can't find any difference.

Thanks. I will check it out. BTW, I couldn't find any documentation on Orion website for how to use database queries in Alert Manager. Do you have any links or docs? I was looking for some pointers. On a separate note, while using Custom Properties, is the custom information stored in a separate DB table in the Orion…

Yes, I did try t1n0m3n's solution and it worked great. Thanks for all your help.

Did you mean eth0? There is nothing connected on eth1. I usually test every connection from the Orion server (instead of my computer). So, yes, I can ping eth0 from the Orion server. Matter of fact, I use the same IP for SSH as well.

bobross, What do you mean by "status command line switch"? Any pointers or links would help. Thanks.

Thanks. I logged into vCenter and gave my domain service account(used exclusively for Orion monitoring) read-only access. I think that did the trick. Also, the hosts seemed to have lined up properly under vCenter. Thanks for all the responses.

DH, will submit a ticket. But I don't think I have gotten that far yet. Still trying to figure out different means of monitoring a custom application on Ubuntu box. Looking at net-snmp but need a tutorial on it (other than net-snmp.org). Writing to a log file is an option but need to weigh pros and cons.

Good point. Doesn't work. I guess I need to add these vmware hosts in DNS as A records, correct? We are using Windows DNS.

Netlogix & mikeprigge, Thanks for your quick responses. I will probably readup on netlogix's response on using a secondary DB to host all this information. As mentioned, there will be a separate application (MS Access or sharepoint) that will build & maintain this relational database. Also, the user maintaining this…

This might sound dump, but where do you check for the ICMP settings in Windows Firewall? I am having the same problem with SNMP not working on a Windows 2008 R2 target. When I turn OFF the Public Firewall, SNMP works fine. I would like it to work with Public Firewall turned ON. Thanks in advance.

I can delete it, but don't know the table. Also, I didn't want to risk such a drastic step and wanted to make sure I didn't commit any faux pas.

I am using Firefox. I configured it and now it is working great. Thanks.

Yes, you are correct. Will need to cut down on some monitors. Thanks for the quick response.

These are physical servers. No, there are no other interfaces on these boxes other then "lo" and "eth0". I checked using "ifconfig".

Thanks for your response. I think I am just going to monitor the root volume for now. Thanks again.

Please ignore this posting. I found the issue. The problem was that this disk was one of the flash memory cards we use in the Server which was reformatted recently. We un-mounted the card which caused Orion to stop monitoring it (for some reason). Unbeknown to us, the card got full and there was no alert sent. Need to find…
