The default up/down alert is to sensitive. You should adjust it to at least wait 2 polling intervals. this thread, adatole‌ does a nice job explaining how to get the alerts to calm down.

Solarwinds is great about beta testing so by the time it goes to RC its usually fairly stable. Plus RCs are supported by tech support, as long as you have active maintenance. If the RC has a feature I am excited to use I will install in production, if not I will wait for Stable.

I just did this in my lab, used servername\administrator as username. Worked fine. I do not have a firewall on the server I used for testing.

Going to have to agree with everything you have said above. Our old helpdesk software (helpdesk authority) stored the attachments on the server in a folder. This was about the only thing about that software that was really smooth.
