I'm happy to see the DPA Mission this month. How about an SRM mission in the near future, too?

I'm impressed Amazon committed to closing down its multiple distribution centers in France as a result of the government's concerns for COVID-19 protection for workers. It's an interesting article that reviews some of the other things Amazon has done to try to reduce their own COVID-19-related "surge" of online purchases…

I Googled "Thwack Baby" and was surprised at what's baby-related AND associated with some kind of thwack. Thwack Baby Blankets - CafePress This one looks to be the bomb for Solarwinds babies!: https://www.teepublic.com/onesies/thwack

The psychology of it is strange, but I was willing to work MUCH harder for the answers to this month's Mini-Mission, despite the fact that any answer, even wrong ones, would be rewarded with the same amount of points, just as if the answers were all correct. I can't claim any fame, or boast that I got them all right--it…

What? I that was here: https://thwack.solarwinds.com/community/solarwinds-community/geek-speak_tht/blog/2017/07/07/altactuator-the-bacon-editio…

Nope. No matter how well they grunge, Mystik Spiral can't even sit at the knees of The Beets when it comes to ability to perform music. The Beets every time.

I can certainly attest to the accuracy of the idea of needing a balance between vacation & work after just returning from seven days of fishing in northern Ontario. I feel refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to tackle big projects and users' problems again.

Meetings. Some are real snoozers. Like this article was. I could barely contain the yawns it was trying to generate. I'm sure it was not worth the close read I gave it; I'd experienced virtually all the scenarios, made most of the same conclusions. I think the author was subtly venting, while making the required commitment…

Agreed. Although . . . Picard wouldn't have existed without Hollywood (or the movie/tv/advertising industry in general), nor would many of the captains in the bracket. I shrug it off--it's a popularity contest. With no measurable guidelines by which to measure any captain's worth, folks can vote on how cute or clean or…

Very impressive--three miles up, three miles down! Way to set an example to your family and the rest of us, adatole You remain an inspiration!

Wow! I'm impressed over the top & back down the other side with your thoroughness of streaming media / movies! My own streaming is far less, but a few I'm enjoying, or have enjoyed, include: * Star Trek: Picard. Poignant, honest, intense, with old friends decades past sacrificing to do the right thing. Competent heroes,…

Until that feature comes along, do you have a work around? I name our AP's with everything we need to filter for reports or configurations. In my environment, AP's have the following name format: Region-Site-Floor/Room-optional Department-optional Hallway indicator (just the nearest room number followed by an…

* Your liability after being hacked? Expect the consequences to only increase and become more draconian. It would be nice to say there's no excuse for not being protected adequately . . . except for :* Hacks are changing by the second--how can a person or business keep up? Well, if you're not running NCM Compliance Reports…

Yes, please make this a reality.

I'm old enough to remember live human operators responding to requests for converting telephone users' names to telephone numbers. "Hello, Operator? Yes, can you connect me to Mortimer Snerd in Brooklyn, New York, at such-and-so street address? What's the number there, please?" Alternately, looking the data up for one's…

There's so MUCH to be done to improve performance in this realm. Perhaps the least publicized (IMHO) is eliminating waste in apps that interact with databases. Poor code, inefficient queries, etc., result in making a database and its hardware strain and appear poorly implemented or designed. When the problem lies squarely…

Always give an option for advanced information--for those of us who are OCD about details. ;^)

You're so right, Matthew. I miss seeing you around the network! My philosophy includes paying people well enough that they won't move away--a golden ring through the nose, so to speak. That, plus training, great work environment, the latest & greatest hardware & technology, awesome tools (Solarwinds!), a superb help desk,…

Regarding blocking SMB at the firewall, it's a no-brainer to NEVER allow all internal traffic out over any port to any destination. Cisco's ASA's come preconfigured to allow this by default through Cisco's security zone prioritization, where Internal devices are most trusted (trust rating 100), and can go to any…

I'm with you on the click bait implying MS is evil. I don't need outsiders' help to infer that on my own. But pushing me at that point of view rankles. Can we all say "Foreign influence of U.S. elections and policy through nefarious non-news and social media influencing"? Because that what that article felt like.

This was a great January series. I'd LOVE to see real/hypothetical stories with SW monitoring solutions saving the day--as a weekly feature. I'd contribute!

There are a number of excellent resources in Thwack that may help you accomplish your goal. First I'd search Thwack for "Avaya" and read what others have had for challenges, and whether they've been able to satisfactorily solve them. Try this link for starters: https://thwack.solarwinds.com/search.jspa?q=avaya You can find…

WAN Killer's a strong part of my tool kit when I turn up a new WAN circuit (and when folks aren't using it yet). But it also is a key troubleshooting tool AFTER a site's been up--even for years-- to verify service provider functionality hasn't decreased. One provider upgraded our circuit from 10 Mb to 100 Mb, but WAN…

Dear Network: Sure'n you'd be hard-pressed t' find a fella who's willin' t sacrifice 'is own fam'ly time & pers'nal life like me. I don' mean t' brag, but I'm in early, stayin' late, workin' God's own hours on weekends & holidays. Why, I've even worked all Saint Paddy's day, and I'll be havin' ya understand right new that…

When we attend an off-site training solution (Ascolta, GlobalKnowledge, Sunrise, etc.), we have to allocate something on the order of $6-8K to cover the class tuition/materials, travel (car rental plus gas plus insurance), lodging, meals, etc. Attending "virtually" via telephone & video conference can be a money-saver, but…

Ah. I'll check that out in my environment. Thank you for clarifying!

Made another entry today. When will points be awarded?

Regarding peers to Spectre and Meltdown, I'm so relieved I don't have to worry about sleeping again. For a while I thought there were no more Day Zero vulnerabilities out there (tongue firmly in cheek), and that would mean I'd have nothing to worry about, right?

You might find that information already included in your NPM or NTA interface views if you're capturing Inventory data with NCM, and if you have the interfaces set to record/report, both locally on the hardware, and remotely in Solarwinds.
