  • I just had a good week with SolarWinds Support and the current IPAM beta. We spent some quality time troubleshooting, diagnosing, and testing problems with IPAM's ability to scan and import subnets and DNS from Infoblox. After I proved to them that this beta IPAM failed to successfully scan and download the info from…
  • I was using IE; perhaps that's the only issue. I'm adding some more core & WAN and Access nodes this morning to see how fast discovery happens, and will check out the results with Chrome. Here's the System info from my test VM for this beta install--is this sufficient for good NPM beta test performance?
  • Without custom properties supported, you might find it simpler (if your network isn't large) to just include a DNS entry in the device name. We do that across 60,000 active addresses, for those which are static in location, like switches. A DNS entry scheme that might be used could look like this: A-BCDE-FGHI-JKLMN-OPQRS A…
  • Let the GAMES BEGIN!
  • Dang! And me being a GUI-man (except on Free-BSD based firewalls), I don't know the answer. Nuts! Wish I could help you out.
  • It seems to me that you may be able to easily tweak this process I published in January of 2016, to focus on a specific date. You can also adjust which devices are included in the report by modifying the Caption section such that it includes all your devices, or all switches of a specific brand or model, or devices just in…
  • I would never want to rely on an NCM job to automatically detect specific changes and automatically implement config changes to routers when there's an issue. I would much prefer to use automated dynamic routing protocols to handle that in sub-second fashion. Even something as time-consuming as a BGP failover is…
  • Both the Nortel Bay BPS2K and the Nortel Bay 470 have CLI access available if they are running recent versions of code. I run BPS2K's at FW 3.6.0.6 and SW v3.2.1.05, and 470's at FW 3.6.07 and SW v3.7.2.13 or higher; CLI access and the "sho run" command are both available at these levels. Bay 470's have the option to run…
  • 1. Why did you purchase VNQM? We've not purchased it yet, but my Communications Platform Team needs something like it, since the proprietary Avaya solution they need is out of their budget. Similarly, they manage systems from Siemens, Mitel, ShoreTel, and Cisco. It seems to me that VNQM might be the one place to manage…
  • Here are some ideas and links that should help you on the path to become a Solarwinds Certified Professional: * Read and understand the topics in these links, including the videos: SolarWinds Certified Professional - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support * Search the Thwack forum for CSP--Solarwinds Certified…
  • With nothing convenient or obvious, do you have a 7x24 NOC or Help Desk that can receive the SMS or e-mail or paged messages, and have them call the customer, thus meeting your requirements? I realize this isn't what you want, but it might be all you can get, for now.
  • Last year I purchased NAM because I found it would reduce my cost of ownership in licenses and pollers and support, as I moved to polling 100% of all interfaces (60,000+). NAM was a good fit because it added UDT to my environment, which saves me loads of time. It also is being mined by my CMDB so the Help Desk and other IT…
  • I'll hazard a guess and hypothesize that one or more of your device administrators occasionally does not follow through with a copy run start or write mem command after making a change. If that step is forgotten and the device reboots at a later date, the change is lost, potentially causing an outage for your customers who…
  • For points, and to help out SW, I've successfully snmp-walked & run your Nexus "show" commands on one of my 5K's, and uploaded it per your instructions. Here's hoping it's useful.
  • I attended the Cisco Tech Day in Minneapolis on Tuesday, November 3, 2015. Cisco staff there announced ISE 2.0 is now released, and I plan on using it to replace ACS--as long as it supports TACACS as promised.
  • I look to the pie chart showing devices that have recently been backed up, versus not backed up. I put that up front up high in NPM so it's easy to see any yellow slice in that pie. Also, when the Daily Config Change Report comes out, I look closely for the tiny date stamp beneath any before/after change to ensure things…
  • I've tried the snmp walk previously; it always errors out after about 40,000 lines of response. The error suggests a security limitation has been reached. Perhaps Cisco doesn't want folks to do full MIB walks? Any suggestions for getting around this limitation?
  • I don't have the definitive answer, but one way of looking at it might be examining how much expense and inconvenience you're willing to incur all at once. If you buy NPM, you've got a good chunk of work in front of you. It'll take serious time to implement it and understand it and create the right kinds of alerts and…
  • If your System Administrator (or you) can't identify the problem, and if a reboot doesn't resolve it, I wouldn't wait for Thwack folks to get back to you with an answer or their experiences, I'd call Solarwinds Tech Support and get a case started. That way someone's working on it for you immediately, while the Thwack group…
  • There are a number of identical requests out there for this. Check them out here, and see which (if any) have solutions you might make work in your environment: * Re: Reporting on NetFlow data * Re: Netflow Custom reports * Re: Netflow Report In my environment we rely on proxy filters to track traffic that travels…
  • Netflow Traffic Analyzer has that reporting view built-in. Start up Solarwinds, go to My Dashboards, select Netflow, then select Conversations: Once there, enter in the IP address of the source or destination device in the Search field, select "Endpoint IP Address". You can set other criteria, too--such as the time frame…
  • cvachovecj‌ Jiri, I found information in the online NCM Admin Guide that says the Time Data Was Last Transmitted or Received is still something that can be shown. Is the Admin Guide out of date? http://www.solarwinds.com/netperfmon/solarwinds/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=OrionCoreAGEditingViews.htm?CMPSo…
  • The answer depends on: * How many APE's you have * Distance and latency between your pollers and their Internet access, and any WAN links they may traverse for getting APE updates * Physical resources of your pollers (you DID use the right amount of RAM and Procs & Proc speed, right?) If you only have one poller, and if…
  • I use NCM and NPM to manage those same brand/model switches via snmp-v3 successfully, so you should be able to as well. We retired all the 15.0 code due to security vulnerabilities or bugs; it's always possible you've got a Cisco bug that's preventing something from working correctly with your snmp-v3 deployment, and I'll…
  • While it's too late for inclusion in the original iteration of this, Yes, we're interested.
  • Given that write mem or copy run start does not have a negative impact, why not execute the write mem command against all the devices? It won't hurt them, and will get all your configs saved at one time. You could schedule it to run daily, weekly--whatever you think is best.
  • I agree with the other comments regarding using Report Writer. It has an option for automatically running reports at scheduled intervals and e-mailing them. Until such time as the pretty GUI Compliance Report creation includes scheduled e-mailing, the Report Writer on the Main Instance poller does what you want.
  • If the device is being properly polled, it shouldn't show gray. Test the polling to ensure all is successful. If it isn't, troubleshoot it and fix it until it is; then it should stop showing that interface as gray/unavailable. The only method I know of for resetting the count/statistics on a successfully monitored…
  • You folks are all impressive, AND you make me grin. Thanks for sharing your little top dog competition, and congratulations to bsciencefiction.tv and Jfrazier Seems like it's only a year ago when I couldn't imagine adding even 100K points to my total. Then I did that, got an MVP, and yesterday passed the SCP examine.…
